"S.O.A.R. Like a Hawk!" / ¡S.O.A.R. Como un Halcón!
S.O.A.R., as in "SOAR Like a Hawk" stands for:
Student-centered Opportunities for Academic Planning and Real-world Responsibility
As we continue diving in to our S.O.A.R. Like a Hawk Advisory time, ask your student about it!
- What types of discussions do they engage in?
- What are they learning about?
- What would they like to see during S.O.A.R. Like a Hawk time?
We do a variety of activities together each week, ranging from Academic and Career Planning (using the Career Cruising platform), to Horning Way Cool Tools, and Digital Citizenship lessons. Have your student log in to Career Cruising with their account information to show you around the site. Directions are below. We also build in time to build community and get to know one another. We are fortunate that students are in multi-age groups and with advisers who are getting to know them just as students get to know one another.
Please remind your student to bring their iPad to S.O.A.R. Like a Hawk and ALL classes every day.

WHAT ARE COOL TOOLS???
Cool Tools are Horning Way lesson plans used to teach, practice and re-teach our community’s universal behavior expectations.
They teach all the students what is expected of them and what that looks like. Throughout the school year, new lessons will be taught to all students. This will take place during S.O.A.R., but may also be taught as mini-lessons to be reviewed by all teachers during class. Selection, creation, and priority for which lessons are taught will be based on the Horning Way Matrix and Horning’s data.
Our 2nd Cool Tool deals with Cafeteria Behavior, which will be delivered during S.O.A.R. Like a Hawk Time, on October 31th. We want all students to have an enjoyable lunch with time to eat and relax. For the safety of all students and staff we have developed the following expectations for cafeteria behavior. Please discuss them with your child. We appreciate working with you on this matter.
We call them the BIG 8.
No more than 14 students at a table
Stay seated at the table you chose after you eat
Be mindful of voice level ( not above 2)

Stairway to Heroin Presentation / Escalera a la heroína
Please click here for information about a FREE upcoming important event, Stairway to Heroin on October 25, 6:30 - 8:30 at South High School. These events have been held throughout the area for a few years. They are usually highly attended, and we are hoping for a VERY large turnout. We will have a live feed into the library with an interpreter for Spanish speaking families.
The heroin and prescription drug abuse epidemic is very real, and we need to work as an entire community to address it. Prevention is hard to measure, but according to SAMHSA and MetLife, "kids who learn about the dangers of prescription drug abuse from their parents were significantly less likely to use substances than those who did not." This is an excellent opportunity for community learning.
