What is Autism?

Autism is a complex disorder that affects the brains normal development of social and communication skills

Autism has no single known cause. Given the complexity of the disorder , and the fact that symptoms and severity vary, there are probably many causes. Both genetic and environment may play a role

Some symptoms of autism include the inability to make eye contact, cuddle, and respond when spoken to. Other symptoms include not smiling or social responsiveness, unusual over or under responsiveness to sensory input such as touch, smell, taste, noise. Others are lining up toys rather then playing with them, flapping arms, twirling circles, constantly humming, and walking on toes.

Two popular autism treatments are (ABA) applied behavior analysis and floor time. Floor time focuses on improving social skill, imagination, and emotional abilities. Unconventional treatments include gluten and casein free diets and using chelation therapy to get of the child's toxic body substances.

The word autism was coined in 1911 by, Eugene Bleular, a Swiss doctor .He based the term on the Greek word autos, which means self. The actual disorder of autism wasn't identified until 1943, when doctor Leo Kanner identified it in children he studied at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland.
