Language Workshop
This week we began Unit 5 in Language Workshop, a unit that focuses on inquiry. The initial book in this unit was a nonfiction book that provided us with some important background information about motion. We discussed speed, friction and the forces of push and pull. Throughout this unit, we will read both fiction and nonfiction texts that relate to the idea of motion. The book we read this week was titled Going Places. In this book, the students in Mrs. Chanda's classroom are given identical kits for constructing go-carts to race in a contest. Rafael, who is good at following directions, and his classmate Maya, a creative thinker, cleverly combine their kits to build a plane that soars above the go carts to win the race!
Literacy
We have been working on vowel sounds. We've learned that the vowels make two sounds, a short sound and a long sound. The short vowel sounds are quite similar to each other so we have been spending time learning to distinguish the slight differences in the short vowels and to recognize and identify the short vowel sound in words.
Just a reminder that to stay on track for mastery of all 40 words, at the end of the 2nd trimester (the first week of March), kindergarten students should be able to read 25 or more of the high frequency words. Have you checked lately to see how your child is doing? Did he/she meet this goal? We are impressed with how many kindergartners are able to do this. Thank you for your continued support at home! To help you practice the words with your child at home we have included the link below.

Math Workshop
Last week we revisited the concept of greater than, less than and equal to. Our students are really showing their understanding of these math ideas. This week we have been working on addition. We have been learning the different ways we can add and the various math tools we can use to figure out the answer and then show our work.
Being able to count to 100 by both 1s and 10s are end of the year expectations for kindergarten students. Recently we worked on counting by 10s to 100. Has your child counted by 10s for you yet?
IMPORTANT: If your child is still not able to count to 100 by 1s independently and successfully, please be sure to practice often.
Valentine's Day
Thank you for helping your child create a valentine mailbox at home. They turned out very cute! The students really enjoyed delivering valentines to their classmates. We also had a lot of fun during our Friendship party today. Thank you very much to all those who helped in any way with our classroom party. We had a lot of fun!
