4-H'er Spotlight: Ashley Honeyman
One of thirteen 4-H members from across the state, Ashley participated in the 2019 Omaha Fashion Week Student Night on February 26.
Held at the Omaha Design Center near TD Ameritrade Park, the event is the fifth-largest fashion event in the nation where youth modeled clothing they had created and shown at the Nebraska State Fair.
“In order to be considered, garments ... should be fashion forward, runway appropriate and display high-quality construction,” said Andrea Nisley, University of Nebraska-Lincoln 4-H Extension Educator. “This was a great opportunity to feature the outstanding work of our 4-H designers at a regional level.”
The sold-out audience of nearly 300 also viewed collections from Nebraska 4-H, the Joslyn’s Kent Bellows Fashion Arts Mentoring Program, Nebraska Family, Career and Community Leaders of America, Joslyn’s Fashion Arts Mentor Program at Yates Community Center, Omaha Central High School, Omaha Burke High School, and Omaha South High School. They showed over 95 looks on the runway at the sixth annual Student Night. The event also included a panel discussion with industry experts. Hair styling and makeup were done by students of Xenon Academy in Omaha.
Student Night is the result of a partnership between UNL, Develop Model Management, the Kent Bellows Mentoring Program, Omaha Public Schools, FCCLA, Xenon Academy and 4-H.
Congratulations, Ashely! Thank you for representing Douglas-Sarpy 4-H well!

4-H Swine Project: Lottery Pig Program
The Nebraska Pork Producers Association (NPPA) has selected the Douglas-Sarpy 4-H program to pilot a new Lottery Pig Program to increase the enrollment and education of 4-H swine exhibitors. NPPA will be responsible for obtaining 80-100 pound pigs, distribute them by having members draw numbers to obtain a pig in mid-April, provide educational sessions on health, nutrition, exhibiting, careers, pork cooking and other topics and provide awards for the participants.
Youth would pay a $100-125 deposit to participate in the program and obtain a pig. Financial scholarships may be given to families with multiple youth or based on need.
We will try to locate facilities to house pigs for those youth not having facilities. Let Monte Stauffer know if you are willing to house pigs for others or if know of other youth that may want to participate in this program. Families are responsible for feeding, caring for, exhibiting, and marketing the pigs.
Contact Monte Stauffer if you are interested or have any questions at 402-444-4092.
