Life of Mary
Queen of Scots
Queen Mary's Reign
Mary Stuart was born on December 8, 1542, in Linlithgow Palace, Scotland. Her father, King James V of Scotland, died when Mary was only 6 days old, now making her the queen of Scots. Mary was betrothed to the 4-year-old French heir. When Mary was 5, she was sent to France where she grew up in a luxurious French court. Mary married Francis, the eldest son of the French King Henry II and Catherine de Medicis.
Mary was the last of the Royal Stuarts, until the birth of James. If both Elizabeth and Mary had died childless, there would probably have been civil war in both Kingdoms. This birth also created lasting consequences which resulted in the union of Scotland and England.
