Dear Parents,
Grandparents' Day is Friday! Please make sure any lunch orders have been placed by Wednesday so our kitchen staff can plan accordingly.
English
Students have chosen writing projects based on our reading. Some are writing their own historical fiction stories, others are trying out stories with multiple storylines, and still others are doing their own research about topics that have surfaced in our reading. I'm so impressed with their ideas!

Math
Last week in math class, students took the Chapter 1 test. Tests were passed back to students on Friday. On Monday, we will go over answers to the test. Students who are eligible for a retake may do so on Friday, October 12th. We also started chapter 2 and worked on converting between fractions & decimals and comparing/ordering fractions & decimals. There are 2 assignments due on Monday: Page 73(2-14)/Page 74(1-6) and Page 79(2-14)/Page 80(1-6).
This week, students will learn how to multiply fractions and simplify factors. They will also practice what they learned last week. At the end of the week, they will have quiz over what they have learned so far in chapter 2.
Enrichment Math
Last week, students practiced solving multi-step equations involving rational numbers. The questions that they worked on were equivalent to what an 8th grader would solve in pre-algebra. This week, we will continue to practice this type of problem and also try solving equations with variables on both sides of the equation.

We had a successful day out at the Dune Grass Nursery. Our 6th graders were able to harvest, count, and bundle 41 of the 61 needed bundles. That is a huge task for one day considering each bundle has 500 chutes of grass. They did an awesome job helping preserve coastal ecosystems. This is a great tie in for our ecosystem unit right now. Another cool thing the kids were able to see were pictures of the grass they dug planted at a house in Harbor Springs the next day. So they actually saw pictures of their work in action. Thank you to all of the parents that sent in supplies, food, and to our chaperones. I really appreciate all that you do for the kids.
This week we will be focusing on biotic and abiotic factors in ecosystems as well as Symbiosis (Parasitism, Commensalism, and Mutualism).
