Fill out the FAFSA: Free Application for Federal Student Aid

We had FAFSA night on October 28 at our school. If you did not fill out the FAFSA at that time, you must do that as soon as possible.

Make sure that you submit the FAFSA to the school of your choice. This is the ONLY way to get Pell Grants, and colleges will not award you scholarship money if they do not have a FAFSA on file for you.

Use your parents' 2018 tax information to complete the FAFSA.

If you have applied to more colleges since you completed your FAFSA, make sure you log back in and edit the section where you chose the schools to send your information to.

Also, once you have made your school decision, you will need to either ACCEPT or DECLINE the monetary offers that have been made to you. Just because you qualify for grants or loans does not mean you will automatically receive them; do your part to communicate with the Financial Aid Office at the school of your choice to ensure that you have the funds in place to cover your college expenses.

Merit scholarships are available.

All of our seniors have applied to at least one college by now. When you get your acceptance letters in the mail, OPEN THEM and READ THEM. Colleges award some students scholarships based on merit, meaning, your class ranking or GPA fall into a category that they consider worthy of a scholarship, so they will offer you money to join their student body simply for applying to their college. Generally, there are directions given from the university as to how to accept these scholarships. If you have any questions about how to receive the merit scholarships that have been offered to you, call the Financial Aid Office at the school that has awarded the scholarship to you.

Check the scholarship application links at the school(s) of your choice.

It's up to you to apply for the scholarships at the schools where you want to attend. You must be accepted to a school before applying to the scholarships that they offer. Make sure you check their scholarship deadlines! The following is a reminder of the scholarship information from all of the schools where you all have applied:

Scholarships for organization members are available.

Check with any organization that you or your parents/grandparents are a part to see if they have scholarship opportunities. Often times students will receive scholarships from parental employers, churches where they are members, masonic lodges where they are members, banks where they do business, DAR members, Girl/Boy Scouts members, 4H members, etc. Ask group sponsors if there are any scholarships available for your organization.

Check online scholarship resources.

It’s worth your time to look for scholarship opportunities from other sources, too. You can do an online search, “Scholarships for ___” and fill in the blank: leaders, volunteers, children of veterans — you name it. You also can try sites that list scholarship opportunities. Here are a few to get you started:
