School Newsletter Term 1, Week 8
Friday 24th March 2023
Kia ora koutou West End Whānau,
It has been wonderful to see so many of our parents/caregivers and whānau at school for our Three Way Conferences. I was thrilled to see our children sharing their learning so far this year with their whānau. Please remember, our fantastic teachers are always available by appointment to meet with you to discuss your child and their learning. All of our teacher's email addresses can be found on our school website. As you may already be aware, we reviewed the way we report learning to parents at the end of last year and have made some improvements for 2023. We would appreciate any feedback you might have about our Three Way Conferences, please click on the link to complete a short survey. Thank you in advance for taking the time to complete this. We value your feedback.
It was a pleasure to host our WES Board Consultation for Term 1 on Monday 20th March. This hui focused on the “United Diversity” aspect of our school vision. We really value being able to discuss the work that is currently happening at West End School and discuss future plans for our strategy with West End Whānau. Thank you to those who were able to attend and I look forward to seeing even more people at our Term 2 consultation.
This week has seen more children participating in trips to Te Rangimarie Marae to experience Pōwhiri and learning on the marae. Thank you to Wiremu, Trieste, and Nuwynne Te Awe Awe for their hospitality, and expertise. This is an amazing opportunity for our tamariki. Thank you also to the parents/caregivers who have been able to support us with these trips. Te Wao Nui O Tāne will be the next group to visit, I know the children and staff are looking forward to these trips.
A number of children have shown great whakamana by participating in sporting events this week. Firstly, we had our largest group of children ever attending the Weetbix TRYathlon held at Ongley Park. This is a massive event with a huge number of children participating from across the region. Thank you to Miss Black for her work organising West End School’s involvement this year. Additionally, we also had a number of children pushing themselves by participating in the Manawatu Tough Kid Challenge hosted by Mount Biggs School. Well done to all involved, it is great to see our children challenging themselves and being their “Best Me”.
Back here at school, we enjoyed a visit from some students from Ibaraki Prefectural Namiki Secondary from Japan. Our children in Room 1 and Room 4 performed a few waiata for our visitors and the visiting students from Japan taught our children some games including baseball and origami.
Our school is a vibrant, dynamic place with a lot of exciting things happening for our children.
Please ensure that you are keeping up to date with our messages about what’s coming up via our newsletter and through our app. I look forward to seeing everyone at our Vibe Assembly next week on Thursday at 9.15am in our school hall. The children and teachers are excited to share the learning that is happening across the school with our West End Whānau. See you there!
I wish you a happy and safe weekend with friends and family.
Ngā mihi nui,

Before and After School Supervision
West End School provides supervision before and after school for specified, reasonable time periods to ensure that students are safe. Students should arrive at school at a good time in the morning, as arriving late is disruptive for the student, and for the class and teacher.
Arriving between 8.30 and 8.50 am gives the student plenty of time to catch up with friends, hang up their school bag, hand in any notices, and be in class ready to start at 8.50 am. If children arrive at school earlier than 8.30 am, they wait on the concrete area next to the turf court. At 8.30 am, a bell rings to signal when students can go to classrooms. Students should leave the school grounds promptly at the end of the day unless they are involved in supervised school activities.
For student safety, we ask parents/caregivers to please make sure that their child arrives at school after 8.30 am and have left the school grounds by 3.15 pm. We cannot guarantee supervision at school outside those times.
If your child is absent from school.
It is really important under the current circumstances you notify the school if your child is absent.
PLEASE DO NOT TXT OR EMAIL THE CLASSROOM TEACHER.
ALL ABSENCES SHOULD BE ADVISED VIA THE OFFICE.
Please remember to advise the office by 8.30am if your child is not attending school.
You can telephone 358-2465 and leave a message or txt 021 118 0156.
ABSENCES CAN ALSO BE SENT EASILY THROUGH OUR SCHOOL APP
In both cases please give a reason for absence.
Thank you.
