Weekly Update- January 11, 2019
Week at a Glance
Welcome, 2019!
Reading- We started a new read aloud this week, Frindle. Students are loving it. Ask your child what a frindle is. I also began BAS testing again to readjust reading groups.
Math- We hit the ground running with unit 4 this week. The focus for Unit 4 is telling time to the nearest minute, calculating elapsed time, measuring mass & volume, and fractions as fair shares. Unit 3 math tests will be coming home early next week.
Science/Social Studies- We started module 2 of E4Tech on Monday, which has a focus on circuits. At the end of the unit students will program a circuit. We've also had lots of Flat Stanley mail rolling in and students are loving it. Be sure to checkout our Flat Stanley link at the bottom of this update to see the pictures.
Writing- We have chosen one of our narratives to publish and we're working on growing our story. This week we learned that writers often tell their story many times before they ever put paper to pencil and that leads are very important.
MAP Scores will be coming home on January 18th
PTO Carnival Canceled
Math Fact Practice
While we definitely want children to know facts from memory, we really want them to have strategies to solve those facts when they forget. Because let's face it... we do forget sometimes! ;) One way to practice facts is to take those facts students don't know by heart and have them create fact cards with a model to show the fact on one side. For example, 3x2 would be on the front of the cards and 3 groups of 2 on the back.
