In Indiana, one person dies by suicide every 8 hours on average, and suicide is now the second leading cause of death for ages 15 – 34 (American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, 2018 Fact Sheet).
In an effort to end this staggering trend, Families First Indiana has partnered with IU Health to offer Question, Pursuade, Refer (QPR) Suicide Prevention training and certification free of charge to schools and organizations throughout the state.
QPR is a 1-2 hour educational program designed to teach lay and professional "gatekeepers" the warning signs of a suicide crisis and how to respond. Gatekeepers can include anyone who is strategically positioned to recognize and refer someone at risk of suicide (e.g., parents, friends, neighbors, teachers, coaches, caseworkers, police officers).
For more information and to schedule a training for your staff, parents, or middle/high school students, contact Sandi Lerman, Community Educator, at SandiL@FamiliesFirstIndiana.org or call 317-644-7245.
