Safe and Drug-Free Schools and Communities Survey
Please read the note below regarding this survey for grades 6-12. Do nothing if your student CAN participate. If you do NOT want your student to participate, please contact Debbie Harris, Student Services Coordinator, at either dharris@fulton58.org or 573-590-8100.
Parent Notification Form
School districts throughout Missouri have been asked to participate in the Missouri Student Survey every other year since 1991. With the inclusion of a violence component in 1995, the instrument became the Safe and Drug-Free Schools and Communities (SDFSC) Survey. The survey is administered to students in at least two classes at each grade level from sixth grade through twelfth grade.
The results of the survey are used to assist the school district in evaluation and planning of its comprehensive school health program. Specifically, the results of the survey indicate the extent of alcohol, marijuana, and other drug use as well as incidences of violence experienced by students. Here are two questions from the survey:
During the past 12 months, how many times were you in a physical fight?
During the past 30 days, on how many days did you smoke cigarettes?
Students are not asked to identify themselves on the survey form. No individual student responses are reported or maintained. Student participation in the survey assists your school district and community gather local data regarding the extent of alcohol, tobacco, and other drug use and violence. This will then also assist in determining statewide levels of such use, safety issues, and violence.
Please let your school’s office know if you have questions or would like more information about the survey.

HORNET SINGERS:
You would never know that we have a short week! These students are working hard, and making excellent progress!
Since one of our musical selections is an American Spiritual, I have attached a link to a great article about this genre of American music. Please check it out! Also, here is a short paragraph explaining the text of "elijah Rock!" from the Fairfield Children's Chorus.
Traditionally, it is believed that African-American spirituals have both a literal meaning and may also refer to the Abolitionist Movement and the underground railroad. Elijah Rock seems to be part of that tradition. While specific meanings behind the text may draw biblical references to Elijah and Moses and their roles as prophets providing sources of freedom, it is also possible that the reference to Moses is related to Harriet Tubman and her role as an abolitionist. Regardless of which message of freedom this song provides, it also serves as an important reminder of our American history.
OBJECTIVES FOR THE TERM:
1. Pitch/Intonation: Students will be able to sing correct pitches and sing in tune.
2. Rhythm/Tempo: Students will be able to sing rhythms accurately, and maintain a steady beat.
3. Diction/Timbre: Students will be able to sing words clearly (able to understand the words) with their most beautiful tone quality.
4. Posture/Breath: Students will sit/stand with appropriate posture for singing, and breathe deeply to create their most beautiful tone.

6th grade band will be working on sheet music as well as lines out of the book. The students will also be receiving sheet music for their May concert. The kids are going to be playing The Circle Of Life from the Lion King and a Star Wars Medley. Things are getting exciting up in 6th grade!
The next concert will take place March 13 at the high school and it is our Parade of Bands concert. All bands 6-12 will be performing in the same concert. This concert will take place at Fulton High School. There will also be a basket raffle and a fundraiser dinner that takes place that evening. It looks like the dinner will be a walking taco/taco bar set up this year.
We have started Cherrydale fundraising again, this time it is all about food! This fundraiser goes to the individual trip accounts for each student to go on their trip their freshman year. The money and order forms are due on February 13 and the delivery date will be the night of the Parade of Bands (March 13) in the High School commons.
It seems to be that time of year where things break and some repairs need to be made. If you do not have a repair plan through Lincoln County Music of BISCO, Jerry's Instrument Repair in Columbia is a great place to take your instruments.
Practice for the weekend:

News From the Art Room
We have been plugging away, and chipping at our projects the last few weeks. Last week, being our first full week back, we are finally seeing some end results, and we will be shifting gears next week in some areas. Students have been working hard and I am really pleased with the work ethic overall in most of my classes this semester.
6th Graders have started their Torn Paper Animals. The idea behind this project, is creating a low relief structure through fiber layering, as well as creative problem skills. ELO 2
7th Graders are working on Illuminated Letters. This is a continuation of a few of the elements we touched on in 6th Grade, and where they can create identity through Artwork. ELO2b
8th Graders are working on an reinterpretation or parody of Grant Wood’s American Gothic. Students get a hands on approach to portrait work weather real or abstract and comparing and contrast of works of Art. ELO2b
As always, if you have any questions or concerns don’t hesitate in contacting me. cchapman@fulton58.org
Artfully yours,
Mr Chapman
