Be A Guardian - Be Encouraging
Success, money, career honors, and pleasures do not assure inner peace, joy, and love.
· I want to see the world as it is, not just how it's comfortable for me to see it.
· Lesson Learned: to love everything that happens. To trust that it is for the best and to learn from it
and be better for it.
· Believe in the beauty of your own voice.
· We can only understand where we are if we know how far we've come.
· Do everything possible to make the relationship we have with ourselves amazing.
· Most successful individuals focus on the process, not the prize.
· Being cool comes with the heaviness of living up to the expectations of others.
· Your followers won't believe what you say unless it matches what you do and what you are.
· The masks we wear, the stories we tell ourselves, and the labels we hide behind. Every day
becomes a search for truth and answers.
· The true value of information comes down to how you use it. Translate information into knowledge.
· A large part of leadership is recognizing that your fruit often grows on other people's trees.
Average vs. Special
· See what others do not see.
· Do what others will not do.
· Ask what others are afraid to ask.
· Give more than others are willing to give.
“Enjoy swimming for swimming’s sake. We have to spend far too much time in the water to not enjoy the process of challenging yourself of moving through the water.” – Jeff Rouse
FROM ATHLETIC DIRECTOR, MIKE NOLAN
Greetings Sports Fans!
As we start to head into the Holiday Season, the IBW Athletic Department would like to say how grateful we are for our entire community of Guardian athletes, coaches, parents, teachers, and support staff. We truly have an amazing school and community to be proud of and thank you for all that you do!
Great to Be A Guardian!
Our winter student-athletes are competing all over the place and striving to get better each and every day. Our Men’s Basketball Program had a great week last week with all levels working hard on the court. The Varsity team took down Tigard in a thriller and did the same against Thurston on Friday with Jacey Canalin pouring in 38 points in the win. The Women’s Basketball Program battled in out against Tigard and Tualatin last week and came up just short in their efforts against both opponents. Very competitive contests and improving daily. Our Wrestling program had big week last week hosting the PIL Youth teams and the women traveling to Canby and both programs traveling to Mountainside. Both programs had a great showing at each event with numerous wrestlers placing at each event.
Great to Be A Guardian!
WEEKLY ATHLETIC SCHEDULE
Weekly Athletic Schedule - December 18 - 30
For a complete listing of the weekly athletic schedule, please visit the athletic dept. website:
IBW Athletics/THIS WEEK. Links to team schedules can also be found on their team pages on the athletic website.
GUARDIAN ATHLETES OF THE WEEK
Basketball - Men, Jacey Canalin, Senior
Jacey's commitment to improvement was on full display during the team's game this past week. His career high of 38 points was against Thurston HS and game high of 25 points against Tigard HS. Our team values a commitment to playing with great effort and building the habits to help you excel. Jacey showed a resilience and competitive spirit on the court that helped our team stay confident and ultimately, win the game.
Basketball - Women, Claire Dixon, Junior
Claire provided strong leadership during two games helping her teammates be in the correct position while also providing some scoring and assists. She continues to step up as our floor general and be a student of the game, learning and developing her skills and knowledge. We look forward to seeing Claire's progress in leading our team on the court. Congratulations Claire!
Cheer, Lola Prosser, Freshman
Lola is a freshman on our green squad and a delight to have in our program. Lola is extremely tough, especially when it comes to stunting. We've been so impressed by her progress so far this season and she will be an important season during our competition season.
Swimming - Men, Simon Walsh, Senior
Simon has been an integral part of the swim team for 4 years now and he also is part of the wrestling team. His work ethic combined with his sense of humor keeps every practice positive. Simon is always a strong performer in the pool, but this last week he was out with an injury and couldn't compete. Never the less he was still there for the team as a leader. He helped re-organize the boys meet line-up that was decimated last minute by injury and illness, making sure that all of his teammates were ready and motivated to step in and support their team. He was on the deck cheering the entire time, helping coaches to get splits, and making sure everyone got to their events on time.
Swimming - Women, Elsie Rainka, Sophomore
Elsie is one of our hardest workers at every pool practice and in the weight room. Her unwavering support of her teammates and positive outlook are an asset to the swim team. At the last meet she challenged herself to swim the 500 freestyle (20 lengths of the pool) for the first time, finishing 5th against Lincoln, Jefferson, and Grant. She was very nervous going into the event but right around the 100 yard mark of the race she clearly overcame those nerves and finished the rest of the race at a strong steady pace.
Wrestling - Men, Roman Tubay, Sophomore
Roman continues to learn and grow as a wrestler. After finishing 3rd last week at Lincoln, he finished 4th this weekend, going 3-2 on the day. This brings Roman’s record to 10-4 on the year. Roman is one of the hardest working wrestlers at practice and can win any type of match. He had a big overtime win on Saturday to make it into the 3rd place match. Roman is looking to qualify for his first state tournament and is off to a great start this season.
Wrestling - Women, Ember Morris, Junior

1st annual National Girls & Women in Sports Day Brunch and Awards celebration
IBW female student-athletes, you are invited to attend the 1st annual National Girls & Women in Sports Day Brunch and Awards celebration. This year’s brunch is a celebration of Title IX and a recognition of some AMAZING individuals who have blazed trails throughout the state of Oregon and around the world! Registration is free of charge and limited to the first 100 girls. The luncheon will be held at Oregon Episcopal School (OES) on February 4, 2024, from 10:30-1:30p.
This is an opportunity for our students to learn about Title IX and hear from those that have come before them. We are excited to announce Vera Jones; motivational speaker, communication coach, author, award-winning television and radio broadcaster, and Syracuse University hall-of-fame scholar-athlete as our keynote speaker.
Please reach out to AD, Mike Nolan, if you are interested in attending.
Interested in a career in broadcasting?
My name is Jacob Patterson, I'm the KBPS Radio Broadcasting Instructor at Benson. We are reaching out in hopes to find more students interested in sports and athletes to do Sportscasting on KBPS. For those who don't know, PPS has its own radio station! AM 1450 KBPS and KBPS.am is our website. We are live 24/7/365 on the radio and online.
One of the highlights of KBPS is our Sportscasting program. KBPS broadcasts live PIL football and basketball games on-air, and trains students how to do it. No broadcast experience is necessary.
We've found that sometimes a great student sportscaster is also an athlete, or an injured athlete who may not be able to compete, but still wants to be involved. We are looking forward to getting more students from across the district on-air on KBPS, and hoping you may know of ideal students for this opportunity.
Please reach out and let myself and KBPS Sportscasting Director Sean Phillipsen know if you have any interested students and we're happy to take it from there. Please let me know if you have any questions, or any ideas!
Fun fact - Nike's Phil Knight was a KBPS Sportscaster before Nike.
Thank you so much!
Best,
Jacob Patterson (he/him)

WEEKLY TID-BITS
Weekly Tid-Bits- "Speak the truth, even if your voice shakes."
"Sometimes, you get what you want. Other times, you get a lesson in patience, timing, alignment, empathy, compassion, faith, perseverance, resilience, humility, trust, meaning, awareness, resistance, purpose, clarity, grief, beauty and life. Either way, you win."- ― Brianna Wiest, The Pivot Year
I. Eyes on the Prize In this season, may you shed fear and show up fully in heart and purpose. While you’re in the arena taking on giants, some people will sit in the bleachers critiquing your strategy. · Keep your eyes on the prize and your ears tuned only to the still small voice within and to those who have done what you’re doing. May the dream you're carrying come alive. May it soar and sing. May the delays and detours not cause you to quit. May you breathe, stretch, and birth the beautiful vision. May it exceed your imagination. Source: Dr. Thema Bryant, Homecoming
II. Controlling Your Attention Arguably the most important skill is controlling your attention. · This goes beyond merely avoiding distractions. · The deeper skill is finding the highest and best use for your time, given what is important to you. More than anything else, controlling your attention is about being able to figure out what you should be working on and identifying what truly moves the needle. Source: James Clear, Atomic Habits
III. A Gentle Reminder If something ignites you — chase it. · Chase it, because you don't want to look back in two years, or five years, or twenty years and wonder what would have been. · Chase it, because you don't want to think back to all of the potential, and all of the beauty, you missed out on because you were afraid, or because you let an idea of yourself that was untrue rob you of your joy or your capacity to move confidently in the direction of the things that inspired you. · Chase it — because you can, because you deserve to experience what is profound and remarkable in this world, because you are worthy of the things that make your chest tighten with happiness and wonder. · Chase it, because you never know what is waiting for you on the other side of your comfort. You never know what is waiting for you on the other side of your hope. Source: Bianca Sparacino, A Gentle Reminder
IV. Question In what ways are you being more compassionate to yourself and others?
V. This Week, I Will 1. Listen to understand. 2. Worry less and trust more. 3. Apply actions to intentions. 4. Use my power to empower others. 5. Believe better is on the way, and not lose hope.
"As the year ends, I want to remind you that life gives you what you need. Lessons and triumphs; hard times, the best of times, and the most mundane of days. So go with the flow. Go with life. Look for the opportunities and the beauty in the small things. Take your time, go slow, and enjoy the moment. Learn from the challenges. Look back with heartfelt gratitude, and go forward with excitement and anticipation. Good things are coming, many challenges are behind you. But most importantly, fall in love with this moment. An ending and a new beginning. A moment in between."
― Lisa Buscomb, Lessons & Reminders
