First Aid and CPR
Pediatrics
Differences
Administering CPR and first aid on a child or infant differs from performance on adults in several ways.
Infant CPR
Rather than two or even one hand only two fingers are used. Placement is also slightly higher but still centered, and chest should only be depressed ~1.5in
One Hand Child CPR
Same as two hand except that due to size of child only one hand is used. For all cases child should be lying flat on a firm surface.
Two Hands Child CPR
Two hands, heel of bottom palm, for all cases approximately 100 compressions, of ~2in, per minute.
External Bleeding
Adults vs Children
Care for both burn and External Bleeding is very similar in both children and adults.
Dressing
Cover the wound with a sterile dressing
Pressure
Apply direct pressure until bleeding stops, if it persists: apply more dressings, bandages, and pressure, take steps to minimize shock and call 911 if not already done
Bandage
Cover the dressing with a bandage and check for circulation beyond the injury (you're looking for feeling, warmth, and color).
