Looking back on October at MSE
From the Desk of A. Pruitt
Happy November MSE Family!
It is hard to believe November is already here and we are in our second nine weeks of school. Here at MSE, we are currently implementing initiatives and activities to increase student achievement, school attendance, and positive social/emotional learning. Our teachers are encouraging all students to be the very best that they can be, stretch them collegiately, and encourage them towards their personal excellence. We are extremely excited about what we have to offer and look forward to a “Noble November!"
If you have any questions about our programs, initiatives, or anything else happening at Memphis School of Excellence High School, please feel free to contact me apruitt@sememphis.org or visit our website sehmemphis.org.
As always, our goal is to encourage an environment where excellence is the only choice!
I hope everyone enjoyed their first nine weeks of the school year. Now let’s look at what the "Soaring Eagles" have done in our first weeks back at school!
Hispanic Heritage Month Program
Students and their parents were invited to the school for presentations hosted by native and non-native Spanish speakers. A special shoutout goes out to Ms. Wheaton and Ms. Velez for organizing such a wonderful event!
Field Day
We love celebrating our students for good behavior and look forward to more celebrations at the end of the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th quarters.
Halloween Dance
One of S.C.'s first priorities- give students a fright! Students were able to dress up, attend a dance during 7th and 8th period, as well as participate in face-painting and slime-making. We can't wait to see all of the success from Student Council in the coming school year!
MSE Wins $25,000 Athletic Grant
At the beginning of October, MSE entered a national competition hosted by Good Sports called the Let's Play High School Athletic Equipment Makeover. The challenge was to create a 60-90 second commercial explaining why we needed a makeover of our athletic program. Competing against four other schools in Memphis and countless school across the country, MSE came in 2nd place and received a grant of $25,000 to be used for the next two years!
Counselor's Corner
From the desk of Ms. Ward we have a few reminders for our students:
Character Trait for the Month: Responsibility You accept personal, relational, career, community, and societal obligations even when they are difficult or uncomfortable. You follow through on commitments and proactively create or accept accountability for your behavior and choices.

A Tradition of Excellence
On October 1st, the TN Department of Education published the official 2018 graduation rates. MSE is proud to announce that we were one of 3 SCS schools to accomplish a 100% graduation rate. This is 5th year that MSE has achieved this milestone!
We want to thank all of our parents, teachers, students, and staff for all of the work they have done to help make this possible! We are proud of our graduating students and can't wait to see what the future has in store for them.
increasing involvement
The parent ESL class is designed for non-native speakers of English who are at a beginning or intermediate level. In this class will cover the four areas of language: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. We will develop conversation for both casual and work settings and cover basic text reading and writing.
This parent technology class will focus on beginning and advance level typing skills and Microsoft office applications such as MS Word, MS Excel, and MS Power Point. ESL classes will be on Thursdays from 3:30 PM to 4:15 PM at the middle school campus.

Academic Coordinator's Report
October was a busy month for our students. We had groups of students take the ASVAB and the PSAT. All seniors took the ACT on October 30th. Students in state tested subjects took their second round of benchmark tests during the week of 10.29 We look forward to seeing how our students did.
Report cards went home with students during the week of October 22. If your student didn't share their report card with you, feel free to reach out to the front office. Students who received failing grades had an additional copy of their report card in the mail.
As we move into November, please continue to remind your student to study for assessments, complete their assignments, and participate in class so that they can have great first semester grades!
