East Rock Park
An easy stroll along the Mill River
This is a great fall walk to admire the changing leaves reflected in the Mill River, and you can add on views from the Summit, looking down over East Rock Park and across New Haven!
How long is the walk?
As long as you want it to be! There are lots of trails you could explore.
Some notes from my family's experience:
We started this hike from the Eli Whitney Museum parking lot. Go through the red covered bridge and you'll see the trails that start from behind the bridge. We turned right and just explored down the trail until we were ready to head back.
These trails along the river are fairly wide and flat. If you just stay on the big trail along the river and do not take any side trails, you can't get lost. We checked out the view from some of the bridges, but did not actually cross the bridges to take trails on the other side of the river. The trails along the river are accessible for most ages, including small children (no steep inclines or other big challenges).
More Information:
Before or after your hike, it is also fun to drive up the park road to the top of East Rock to check out the view of New Haven!
The GIANT STEPS is a really amazing way to get to the summit, too! The Giant Steps are steep, with some possible drop offs. You'll probably want an adult for each child under about age 6.
