Big picture

Bullying is another Adverse Childhood Experience (ACE)

ACEs are adverse childhood experiences, or potentially traumatic events that occur in childhood. Examples of ACEs include experiences of violence, neglect, abuse, and death or suicide of a family member. Bullying is another ACE. Traumatic experiences can have negative, lasting effects on a person and impact their development, socialization, and education.

The CDC recently published an eBook Preventing Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs): Leveraging the Best Available Evidence that includes strategies for preventing ACEs. While many take a multi-generational family approach to preventing ACEs, some of them broadly relate to bullying prevention, such as:
  • Teaching social-emotional learning
  • Promoting bystander intervention
  • Connecting youth to caring adults and activities
  • Intervening to lessen immediate and long-term harm has many resources on how to prevent bullying, including: Military Connected Youth and Bullying; Bullying and Youth with Disabilities and Special Health Needs; Preventing Bullying Through Moral Engagement; and Bystanders Are Essential to Bullying Prevention and Intervention. There's also a new blog on Bullying Prevention: an International Cause.
