Center Township Weekly Update
December 9, 2022
December Already!?!
The students and staff have been working so hard these first couple of months. The time has just flown by! Somehow, we have already gotten to December, and January is creeping up right behind! It has been great to see the students grow throughout this first part of the year. Even though there is a lot happening this month, we will continue to nurture the students’ minds, bodies, and souls throughout the rest of the 2022 calendar year!
Trick Hoops and Alley Oops
Loud cheering could be heard throughout the school as the famous Harlem Wizards Basketball Team made an appearance at CT this week. The Wizards visited at an assembly, to explain who they are and what they do. They also pumped the students up for the Wizards vs School Staff fundraiser game on January 7, 2023. (See more information about this event and how to purchase tickets below.) The students and staff had a great time interacting with the players, trying their hand at a few trick shots and learning dance moves.
The Harlem Wizards are a traveling, professional entertainment company who have visited nearly all 50 states and many countries around the world. They primarily focus on fundraising events for non-profit and school organizations. The CT PTO, in collaboration with the SOAR Program, is sponsoring this event to raise funds to purchase and install a rock-climbing wall in our school gymnasium for the students to enjoy.
We hope to see everyone at the Intermediate High School on January 7th to see our teachers and staff try their best in the game against the Wizards.
Fine Feathered Friends
The Audubon Society of Western Pennsylvania educated students in every classroom at our school this week thanks to CT parent, Chris Kubiak, who arranged the visit. The students were thrilled to experience an up-close encounter with living raptors. Utilizing a live bird of prey and hands-on discoveries, students explored the natural history of Pennsylvania’s raptors, the similarities and differences among species, the importance of habitat and habitat conservation, and direct and indirect human impacts on these fascinating creatures. A screech owl was "on hand" to assist as an avian ambassador.
Zoomobile Visit
A slithering creeper, a night flyer and a slow-moving pal were part of a motley crew that made its way to CT this week for a program about wildlife and protecting the environment. The animals that came with the Pittsburgh Zoo and PPG Aquarium's Zoomobile and its “The Choice is Ours” program were a ball python snake, a barn owl, and a painted turtle.
Students shrieked as they watched the snake uncoil itself from the arm of the zoo representative. The reptile flicked its black tongue in and out of its mouth to the children's amazement.
To see the animals, students first had to answer multiple choice environmental questions like, “How many pounds of garbage does the average American throw away each day?” Only after they guessed right and had learned something about ways to help the environment were the animals revealed.
The CT PTO sponsored this educational and fun filled assembly for the kindergarten, first and second grade students.

CT is Bringing the Harlem Wizards to Butler!!
The world-famous Harlem Wizards will visit Butler Senior High School on Saturday, January 7, 2023 for an evening of great fun and fundraising. Doors will open at 6pm and game time will start promptly at 7pm. The Wizards will play a basketball game against a team of Center Township and other Butler Area School District staff. The event is a fundraiser being held by Center Township PTO and the CT SOAR program. The fundraiser will help raise money for a rock-climbing wall for the Center Township gym.
The energy at a Wizards game is electric. The laughter is infectious. The dunks are rim-rattling, high-flying and awe-inspiring. The hoop artistry, ball-handling, tricks and teamwork are mesmerizing. What really takes it to another level is the hometown participation from the kids on court experiences, to the teachers and other school district staff who take on the Wizards as the "hometown heroes". Besides cheering for their teachers, the kids are involved all night long. They will all have a chance to get on the court.
The experience at a Wizards game is the community and the school coming together for a night of good, pure fun and excitement and it's a fundraiser.
