Growing Together

Now that our new school year is underway, it’s time to tell you about an important development for next year that may affect your elementary age child.

Durham Public Schools is implementing a new student assignment plan for elementary students, and it brings home a world of new possibilities.

Starting in 2024, the school district will be split into five regions, ensuring that students in each region have access to school choices that are equitable, close to home and supported by short school bus routes.

Every child will be able to attend their base school or access a year-round choice, an international baccalaureate program, a Montessori school or a dual language immersion program that is just down the road from their home. Plus, all base schools will provide STEM, arts and global language learning.

There is nothing you need to do now – this is just a heads-up that more information will be coming soon. To see the latest updates from the district and the superintendent, visit the new website for the plan – dpsnc.net/possibilities. Again, that website is dpsnc.net/possibilities.

Growing Together Question of the Week

Each week the Growing Together Team will highlight a frequently asked question to provide support for the Growing Together Implementation. This week’s question:

Q: When will families be able to express the desire to opt out of an assignment to a program school (IB, Montessori, or Year-Round)?

A: Opt-out applications will be available starting March 1, 2024.

These FAQs and many more are located on school-specific FAQs here: https://www.dpsnc.net/Page/7041
