Message From Principal Webb
Dear families,
The weather is getting nicer and the kids are excited to play outside later in the evenings. Just a reminder to please have your student get plenty of rest during these last few weeks of school.
Just a reminder of the exciting news below on our family reading night opportunities. We will also provide each student at Longfellow with a book that aligns with their grade level even if you can't attend the family zoom night. Online students may stop in the building to pick up your book.
Below is also information on our spring mySAEBRS screener for 2nd-6th grades. If this is something you would like to opt-out of please call the office or let your child's teacher know.
During the early out this Wednesday, our teachers spent time doing Equity learning.
Please note the information on 6th-grade music opportunity and a library book return reminder.
Most sincerely,
Kelli Webb
mySAEBRS screener
Dear Families,
This letter provides information about our school’s continued efforts to identify all students who may need additional help to meet student learning goals. During the second half of the 2020-21 school year, the students in our 2nd-6th grade classrooms will participate in a districtwide project to adopt a universal screening tool that is designed to help schools identify students who may need additional support due to social, academic, or emotional concerns.
For this project, we will use the student universal screener, called mySAEBRS, provided through FastBridge Learning®. FastBridge Learning® is the same system we use for our reading and math screeners three times a year. The mySAEBRS screener asks students to complete a 20-item computer-based questionnaire related to their academic, emotional, and social skills. Our school’s leadership team will review the screening scores after the testing. A screening report will be sent home with all students as part of their end-of-year information.
We plan to participate in this screening between the dates of May 12 and May 28. If you are concerned about your student participating in the mySAEBRS screening process or want additional information, please contact me.
Thanks,
Principal Webb

District News:
Dear Families,
Beginning today, children ages 12 and older are eligible to receive the COVID-19 vaccine following the Food and Drug Administration’s authorization of the Pfizer vaccine for emergency use in this younger age group. This is the only COVID-19 vaccine available to children at this time. Through our partnership with Johnson County Public Health (JCPH), we are providing information to families on how eligible children can receive the vaccine. We would also like to provide resources for those who wish to learn more about the COVID-19 vaccine and children.
If you or your eligible family members would like to receive the COVID-19 vaccine, below are local resources for scheduling an appointment:
- UI Health Care Online Vaccine Scheduling: https://uihc.org/schedule-your-covid-19-vaccination
- Mercy Iowa City Family Practice: Call (319) 339-3520
- Towncrest Pharmacy: https://www.towncrest.com, or call (319) 337-3526
- Appointments may also be available through local CVS, Hy-Vee, Wal-Mart, or Walgreens locations.
COVID-19 vaccines are available at no cost; however, vaccine providers may charge an administration fee, which is covered by most insurance. For uninsured patients, this fee is covered by the Health Resources and Services Administration’s Provider Relief Fund.
For individuals seeking information about the COVID-19 vaccine, you may visit the JCPH, Mercy, or UI Health Care vaccine information websites. In addition, UI Health Care will host a Facebook Live Q&A with infectious disease specialist Melanie Wellington, MD on Friday, May 14, at noon. Visit www.facebook.com/uichildrens to watch the live Q&A and submit your questions. Specific information regarding the COVID-19 vaccine and children can also be found here https://uichildrens.org/health-library/covid-19-vaccines-your-child.
If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to reach out.
Sincerely,
Matt Degner

P-EBT for qualifying families:
The USDA will be providing increased pandemic P-EBT benefits for qualifying families. While the District does not facilitate this program, we have been informed that families must complete a 2020-2021 Free and Reduced Lunch Eligibility Form to qualify for benefits. Additional information is available for families through the Iowa Department of Education’s Pandemic P-EBT page. Participation in the program does not change students’ ability to participate in the District’s free Grab & Go meal program.

Longfellow Elementary stands with all people of color in the fight against racial injustice and inequality. We all deserve to be safe and secure. Longfellow Elementary, as part of the Iowa City Community School District, will not tolerate racism, hate, and other discriminatory acts. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. famously said that, “injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.” We will work hard to not let today’s injustice stop us from creating a better tomorrow for our school community. Please know that even though it is summer, you can reach out anytime.
