The Bird Nest
News and Notes from Clever 6-8 Middle School
A Message from the Principal!
Happy February!! In an effort to help students track and monitor their daily coursework. All 6th-8th students are now eqiupped with a tracking folder. The folder contains their weekly progress report, academic planning sheet, and a hall pass log. Students are expected to keep this with them during all classes and update it once assignments have been completed. New progress reports will be distributed each Monday and students will staple them into this folder as a way to keep a running record. Again, we are hoping that this will help students be more responsible in their learning.
Student Handbook Highlight - Cell Phones
We are continuing to have issues with student cell phone usage during the school day. Please see the excert from the student handbook regarding cell phone usage. Our next step is to develop a procedure for each classroom for collection and distribution of student cell phones.
- Students may use cell phones during lunch and recess. Usage is limited to playing games, listening to music, or sending and checking messages. Students are NOT allowed to take pictures or make phone calls during this time.
- Cell phone usage is not permitted during pass time or class time. Teachers will establish procedures for device collection and redistribution.
ELA Curriculum Focus
Each 6th-8th grade students is required to complete one alternative book report during the quarter. Students have the freedom to choose their own book and project for demonstrating mastery. All 3rd quarter book reports are due the week of Mach 2nd. This will give them time to present during class. Please see the link below with the alternative book report options.
Anti-Bullying T-Shirt Fundraiser
Students from Mr. Chappell's PBL (Problem-based learning) class are organizing a fundraiser. In this class our first task was to figure out what problem we wanted to attack. We explored many options but narrowed it down to Bullying. Bullying is a problem in many schools across the country and there are already alot of efforts going into the prevention. We started out by researching what steps to take in an effort to solve this issue. One of our steps was to design t-shirts and hoodies and sell them to bring awareness about the problem of bullying. Every penny we raise will be donated to Care to Learn, an organization that will use the money to help address the issues that lead to students being bullied. If you would like to support this cause, please check out the link below.
