Counseling in the month of September

Our focus for September is helping the students understand how to recoginize, report, and refuse bullying situations. We will be incorporating what it means to be a bystander and the responsibilties that come with that. Not only can bullying happen in person, but also online which is cyberbullying. ALL students will be able to name a trusted adult they can go to if they need to report. If you SEE SOMETHING, SAY SOMETHING.

How to get your child to talk about school

  • Some kids don’t like to share information about their school day.

  • The way you ask kids questions can encourage them to talk more.

  • Ask specific, open-ended questions instead of questions that can be answered with yes or no.

"What was the best thing you did at school today?"

“We always played dodgeball at recess. What do you and your friends like to do?”

"What was the most interesting thing your teacher said today?"

"What made you laugh?"

"How were you kind or helpful today?"

"How was someone kind or helpful to you?"

"What was the highlight of your day?"

  • Sharing something about yourself can get your child to open up.

  • Positive questions (“What’s your favorite class?”) let your child express concerns.

  • Find natural moments to talk — like at dinner or riding in the car — when you’re not in a rush.

Request to see the counselor

If your child needs to see the counselor they can tell their teacher or fill this form out on their counseling google classroom. This link also gives you as a parent a chance to fill out a referral if you feel your child might need to visit with one of us. We will make sure to see them in a timely manner.

Barker Gives Back

What is the Gives Back program?

The purpose is to assist student needs with resources to insure they are successful, strong, and striving students through caring and purposeful donations.

Vision: To use a network of parents/guardians to communicate the needs of students within our school as established by our counselors, in the hopes that people within the school would be able to meet these needs.

If your child is in need of resources, such as food, clothing, or school supplies, please e-mail our school counselors.

If you’d like to learn more about the Barker Gives Back program, or would like to be a part of our Gives Back Committee, please e-mail:

Our current needs are composition notebooks. If you would like to donate please have your child bring them to the front office. THANK YOU!
