MyAVID Core Strategies Focused Note Taking

From the Principal

Dear Sunflower Families,

As part of our AVID Elementary implementation our staff has committed to teaching and integrating the Focused Note-Taking process into instruction. This strategy is taught K-5 and teaches scholars how to learn content and skills, as well as interact with and apply the information so it is committed to memory. Please see the video above with more information about the Focused Note-Taking process and see the photos below with examples of what this looks like at Sunflower.

PTO met last night with a great turn out of both new and returning families. We discussed fundraisers, Marathon Club and other volunteer opportunities. One concern that came up was the amount of traffic behind the school during dismissal. The road behind the school is not open to traffic. We would ask that you do not drive behind the school to pick up your child or for any other reason. The middle school will be sending the same message. Thank you for your partnership in keeping our scholars safe at Sunflower.

As always it is an honor to serve as the principal of Sunflower Elementary.

Household Economic Survey

One Household Economic Survey per student household should be completed, electronically signed, and submitted in PowerSchool by today. This data will impact district funding and is being used to determine family eligibility for student fee waivers. The Help Desk can assist with technology questions, 785-330-4357 or ITWorkOrder@usd497.org. Currently Sunflower has 241 completed surveys.

From the Counselor

September is Suicide Awareness & Prevention Month

Here are some links to resources for parents/guardians regarding how to talk with your children if you are worried that they are feeling suicidal. These links will help you know what to say to a child who is feeling suicidal, that talking about suicide does not make a child more likely to attempt suicide, and what you should do if you're worried your child is close to attempting suicide. If you have any questions or concerns, please reach out to Julie Heatwole (school counselor) at #785-330-4860 or jheatwol@usd497.org

Harvester's BackSnacks and BrainFood Programs!

Sunflower will be starting up our two awesome FREE programs for our scholars in K-5th at the end of September! Harvester's BackSnack program provides a FREE bag of non-perishable food and snacks like cereals, fruit snacks, water, vegetables, soup, granola bars, and more! The BrainFood program provides FREE books that our scholars may pick out and keep forever! These programs will occur throughout the school year and be distributed to our scholars on the last day of each school week. There is no paperwork to complete and no eligibility requirements other than these programs being helpful for you and your family! All you need to do is contact Julie Heatwole (school counselor) at #785-330-4860 or jheatwol@usd497.org to let her know you would like your scholars to participate in these programs.

Sunflower Food Pantry & Hunger Action Month

We are proud to announce that for the 9th year we will host a Food Pantry at Sunflower Elementary.

We are currently working out the details with covid protocols, needs and changes in space.

The pantry is a joint effort between Sunflower and Just Food, the food bank of Douglas County. We also depend on the help of private donations.

Please consider dropping off a donation during the month of September to help those in our Sunflower family experiencing challenges during this unprecedented time.

Non perishable donations can be dropped off when the building is open and placed in the blue barrel just inside the front doors. Please avoid arrival and dismissal times as these are very hectic.

Some current needs are cereal, soup, fruit, canned tuna/chicken, pasta, sauce, soap, shampoo, toothpaste, deodorant, toothbrushes and feminine hygiene products. Individual portion cups for quick meals are always appreciated.

Questions can be directed to Allene Schworm aschworm@usd497.org

Please follow the link if you are interested in utilizing this service. This will ensure we have an adequate supply for our families. There are no requirements.
