Help Our Community Stay Safe

With the return to school, we have new norms, rules and ways of being as well as old ones that we have forgotten about in the time away. Please be gentle with one another as we all adjust and please help us in the following areas:

Morning Drop Off and Pick Up

If dropping at the yellow curb, thank you for pulling forward to the furthest spot so that others can pull in behind smoothly. Please do not drive into the staff lot unless you are using the handicapped drop off/pick up. Limit gathering in Cherry Valley Park and keep an eye on kids in the trees etc. Lots of limbs are being pulled on, both tree limbs and human limbs. Kindness and gratitude for all.

Dogs on Campus

We are a social community and almost everyone loves a puppy but dogs are not allowed on campus during school hours unless they are pre-approved service dogs. The playground became a bit of a dog park during distance learning, many of us adopted pandemic puppies and are eager to share, yet we need to ensure safety and health for all students, staff and families. Please leave your pup at home when coming on campus before 6pm.

PCS Elementary Soccer League

We are excited to announce that we are starting our first PCS elementary soccer league! Students don't need to have previous experience in order to participate. Schools will practice and scrimmage at their school site from September 20th - November 2nd and then participate in a final tournament with all PCS schools in early November as a culminating event. (Some practices will be made up due to Fall break at the coach and teams discretion). Practices will be held either on Mondays or Tuesdays after school at your child’s school site. We are hoping to form multiple teams at each school and then group students by grade level. What better way to bring our community together than by coaching students in a team building sport and having them play schools across the district!

What your child will need:

  • TK/K- just their sneakers (NO cleats or shin guards)

  • 1st-3rd- shin guards required, soccer cleats are recommended but not required

  • 4th-6th- shin guards and soccer cleats are required

If you don’t have access to soccer equipment OR if you have shin guards or cleats you would like to donate, please contact Gina Roberts at to coordinate.

Please make sure to complete the following:

  • Suggested donation of $40 per child, check made payable to Petaluma City Schools

Your school sites practices are as follows:

Mondays or Tuesdays after school from September 20th-November 2nd AT CHERRY VALLEY.

TK/K - 1:35-2:35 on Mondays

1st-3rd- 2:35-3:35 on Tuesdays

4th-6th- 3:05-4:05 on Mondays

Author and Cartoonist Stephan Pastis Coming To MCCV! (Grades 4-8)

On Wednesday, September 15th, your student will have the opportunity to meet and listen to bestselling author and cartoonist Stephan Pastis as he introduces his funny, quirky (and possibly subersive?) new graphic novel, Squirrel Do Bad - Trubble Town #1 . Stephan is known for his wry and cynical humor, and kids will enjoy the twists and turns of his new book. We are delighted to have him visit visit MCCV - and this is our first in-person school visit since March of 2020 - we're so happy it's at your school!

If your child is interested in purchasing a book, give this form and payment to his/her teacher. Checks should be made out to Copperfield's; Stephan will be happy to autograph (and maybe draw in!!) your child's copy!

Mary Collins School Garden

Garden classes began with such blessings! Students in person, a little rain, a praying mantis, hummingbirds, and lady bugs visiting the garden. There has been lots of growth and activity in our beginning months back at school. Last week the students did a "get to know the garden hunt" to familiarize themselves with all the happenings in our school garden. The 4th and 5th graders brought wood chips into the garden with Ms. Koniak to beautify and keep the dust down. This week we are getting soil to fill the remaining garden boxes, and we are working on weeding and pruning. Next week we will all move into planting our fall seeds and nursing them into starts. Check back for more news from the garden as we work together to care for our lovely outdoor learning environment.
