First Grade Weekly Update

First Grade Assessments

This week our first graders were very busy in their classrooms. The teachers assessed the students on their writing, reading, and math skills. The first assessment was a writing assignment where each student was given a writing prompt to write about a small moment in their lives. They all were given lined paper and some time to brainstorm their ideas and then write them down on the paper. This is a very intense time for our young students. They did an amazing job of putting their thoughts together, forming, sentences, applying punctuation, and even phonetically spelling their words. The teachers use these writing samples to show growth and to get an idea of where each student is in the development of formal writing.

The next assessment was a reading test that the students took on the chrome books. This is a test where students log onto their individual chrome books, listen with headphones to a series of questions, and then "click" on their answers. It is an early literacy test that helps the teachers identify the students that have mastered their letters and sounds and those that need some time reviewing them. This early literacy test will be given again at the end of the first quarter. We will share our scores with you throughout the year.

Our final assessment was a math test that was a paper and pencil test. This assessment focused on number sense and addition and subtraction equations up to 10. Teachers will use these math assessments to form their classroom instruction and provide support to students who need it. We will be giving the same math test at the end of our first unit and will again share the results with you.
