The Lumberjack Edge
Cedar Mill Elementary School
October 26, 2018
Dear Cedar Mill Community,
Thank you for your time this week to meet with your child(ren)'s teacher(s) during Parent-Teacher Conferences. We value the dedicated partnership of our parent community as we support learning and growth for all students. Although formal conferences occur only twice each school year, we are dedicated to continuing our partnership throughout the course of the entire year. Thank you for all you do and the role you play in your child(ren)'s education.
At Cedar Mill, we teach children important skills for getting along with others and doing well in school. It also helps our school be a safe and supportive place where everyone can learn. An important component of our curriculum is to help children protect their bodies, get support when abuse has occurred, and report to a trusted adult. In accordance with Erin’s Law, we are educating children about sexual abuse and promoting awareness within our communities. At Back to School Night, I shared information from the Oregon Department of Education around upcoming required lessons for Oregon schools to comply with Erin’s Law.
In these lessons, students will learn three types of skills:
• Personal Safety. Students will learn ways to determine if a situation is safe or not. Students will also practice strategies to avoid peer pressure in unsafe situations.
• Touching Safety. Students will learn about safe, unsafe, and unwanted touches, and rules about touching private body parts. They’ll also learn to say no to unsafe or unwanted touches, and to tell an adult if someone breaks rules about touching private body parts.
• Assertiveness. These lessons will also give students a chance to practice asking an adult for help, telling an adult about an unsafe situation, and being assertive to get out of unsafe situations.
Your child’s teacher will be sharing these sexual abuse prevention lessons with you prior to teaching them but you can also find them on fightchildabuse.org. The requirement of Erin’s Law is four lessons a year at each grade level, K-12. Instruction is scheduled for February through May 2019. Please contact your child’s teacher if you have any further questions or for opt out information. Thank you for helping us to make our school a safe and supportive place where everyone can learn.
Sincerely,
Amy Chamberlain, Principal

Oregon Battle of the Books!
Oregon Battle of the Books (OBOB) is kicking off for the school year and many students are already reading this year's titles in preparation for the fun and excitement! We are looking forward to another fantastic year of reading and appreciate the awesome support you've given OBOB in the past by reading books from the list in class, promoting the program among students, coaching teams and volunteering at our final battle!
Please mark your calendars for our final battle on Monday, February 25 right after school. It's a fun and exciting afternoon and if you're able, we could really use your help to act as moderators! For the now, we wanted you to be aware of the following:
Students are asked to form teams that consist of 4 students and an adult volunteer to act as their coach. Students choose their own teams. This is a difficult process. Most conversations with forming teams will happen at school. Please encourage students to find teammates who have similar expectations about how much each team member will read and how often they will meet. If you are aware of any student who really can not find a team, please have them submit a registration form and we will try to find teammates for them.
The Battle is on! The Oregon Battle of the Books (OBOB) is an exciting tournament of reading. Students in 3rd - 5th grade will form teams, read books from the OBOB reading list and then compete against peers by answering questions about what they have read at the final battles in February. Teams must complete a registration form and turn it into the library by Monday, November 5. Students and adults are invited to come find out what OBOB is all about at an informational meeting on Monday, October 29 at 6:30 pm Cedar Mill Elementary. Read on!
Please feel free to contact us if you have any questions!
Gratefully,
OBOB Coordinators
Janell Hosch
Marla Merriwether

Parent Education Opportunities
Last week's Treats and Talk came with a twist! Mrs. Blakeslee, Counselor, and Mrs. Hargrave, Student Success Coach, offered a brief introduction to social/emotional learning, followed by a Q and A session in relation to their roles and the topic. Thanks to those who were able to join.
As parent involvement in vitally important in a child's education, Cedar Mill is looking to provide additional parent education sessions that would meet the needs and interests of our parent community. We are looking to partner with West TV Elementary in an effort to make more opportunities and topics available for parents in both communities to attend. Please take a moment to fill out this brief survey to help us in our planning and best meet your needs. We ask for responses no later than Friday, November 2nd.
Thank you for your ongoing partnership in your child(ren)'s educational success.
Magnificent Music Days
Magnificent Music Days are coming soon, on November 5, 6, and 7 during music classes! Students, get ready to share! Sing a song, play a song you know on an instrument, bring an item to share from another country, perform a skit either alone or with friends, do a magic trick, tell a joke. If you have a special skill and want to share but it isn’t on this list, just ask Ms. Cole.
This is a time for students to practice presenting in front of their peers, and being a great audience member. On Magnificent Music Day, we will create our “program” during class, listing who is presenting and what they’re presenting. Then we’ll enjoy our special sharing time. MAGNIFICENT!
MakerSpace Donations Needed
The Cedar Mill MakerSpace is up and running; students have the opportunity to come in at lunch recess twice a week for creation and exploration! We are always in need of donations of arts & crafts supplies and recycled materials for the Cedar Mill MakerSpace. We’ll take almost anything students can use to make and create; here’s a link to a list of suggestions. Even small amounts of any material will be very much appreciated!
Below are some examples of some of this year's creations.
Physical Education
Cedar Mill’s physical education curriculum is based on developing motor skills, improving fitness, and teaching sport game/units.
This month in PE:
- Grades K-2 will be working on the critical elements of proper catching and throwing form. We will practice skills during various lead up games and skills challenges. In previous weeks, this group worked on jump roping, hula hoops, large motor skill movements, fitness activities, and soccer skills.
- Grades 3-5 will be working on volleyball skills. These skills will include bump (pass), set (overhead pass), and serving. We will work in small groups and teams as we play a variety of skill games. In previous weeks, this group worked on skills for soccer, football, catching & throwing, and fitness testing.

Emergency Drills: Earthquake Preparedness
Beaverton School District recognizes that what we do now, before an earthquake occurs, will determine what our lives will be like after. All schools are required to conduct at least two earthquake drills during the school year. Last week, all schools participated in an earthquake drill during the Great Oregon Shakeout. For more information on how the Beaverton School District is prepared to respond in the event of an earthquake and well as additional tips and reminders on how to prepare at home, click here.
