Safety Drills
Hello,
I'm sending out my monthly communication a few days early as there is a lot happening at Prairie Trails the next few weeks.
We will be starting our safety drills next week, and they will be spread out over the rest of the month. As a reminder, the drills that we practice in school are evacuation (i.e. fire drill), hard lock down, bus evacuation, and shelter-in-place (i.e. tornado drill). A new state law requires schools to give parents an opportunity to opt out of the hard lock down drill. If you prefer that your child does not participate, please email me.
Teachers will go over the expectations for each type of drill, and drills are always announced so students know what to expect. We will remind students that it is essential to listen and to follow their teacher directions at all times. Our number one priority is the safety of your children; practicing these drills is imperative.

ART
Kindergarteners will express themselves through art-making activities that relate to a range of colors, shapes, lines and textures. Our young artists will learn about how fun the creative process can be as they look at different artists and experiment with various art materials. If you have any questions, please email me at: lpennington@rtsd26.org. Lauren Pennington
LIBRARY
We are very excited to encourage the love of reading by offering your kindergarten student an opportunity to check out one book per week each Thursday. We ask families to keep an eye on books that come home so they are well taken care of (away from food/drink and pets). Please make sure that your student returns their book every Wednesday in order to check out a new one on Thursday.
MUSIC
Music is a wonderful way for students to improve language & gross motor skills while having fun and expressing themselves. We’ll start the year by exploring steady beat, movement & the beautiful high/low sounds our voices can make. Feel free to reach out to me if you have any questions: mthompson@rtsd26.org Meghan Thompson
PE
Kindergarten Chipmunks have PE 5 days per week! Please make sure your child has a pair of gym shoes because he/she will be actively moving and playing in the gym every day. In kindergarten PE we focus on developing the following: fundamental motor skills (locomotor & non locomotor/stability movements), object manipulation skills, sportsmanship skills, working cooperatively on a team, showing respect (for one’s self, others, & equipment), and developing a lifelong love of physical activity. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me at evossmiller@rtsd26.org

STEM
Kindergarten students will have STEM classes every Monday and Friday. During STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) class we will be investigating units within the areas of plants, weather, animals, force and motion. Students love to investigate the world around them, and I look forward to working with them all. If you have any questions, please reach out to me at jwagner@rtsd26.org.
