Busy & Bustling...
In addition to book talks, Mrs. Carner has provided advice and resources to the SS 8 and SS 12 classes, as students complete a variety of research-based projects based on controversial topics and local elections, respectively. Thanks to NOVEL NY and our local WSWHE BOCES, as well as funding from our own district, the LMC is able to provide numerous databases that provide accurate and reliable information, removing the confusion of searching the Internet at random!
Most recently, Ms. Hoffman's 9th grade ELA classes have experienced fake news up close and in person, as part of a news and media literacy unit that leads into a research project on a controversial topic. The specific point of the project is for students to understand their own point of view and the associated bias' with regard to their chosen topic, but also to examine the opposing viewpoint...even if that's extremely uncomfortable. Check out our News & Media Literacy Padlet to see the resources we use!

From the publisher:
In this genre-defying page-turner from Lygia Day Peñaflor, four teens befriend their favorite YA novelist, only to find their deepest, darkest secrets in the pages of her next book—with devastating consequences.
Miri Tan loved the book Undertow like it was a living being. So when she and her friends went to a book signing to hear the author, Fatima Ro, they concocted a plan to get close to her.
Soleil Johnston wanted to be a writer herself one day. When she and her friends started hanging out with her favorite author, Fatima Ro, she couldn’t believe their luck—especially when Jonah Nicholls started hanging out with them, too.
Penny Panzarella was more than the materialist party girl everyone at the Graham School thought she was—and she was willing to share all her secrets with Fatima Ro to prove it.
Jonah Nicholls had more to hide than any of them. And now that Fatima’s next book is out in the world, he’s the one who is paying the price...
Perfect for fans of One of Us Is Lying—and told as a series of interviews, journal entries, and even pages from the book within the book—this gripping story of a fictional scandal will keep you on the edge of your seat from beginning to end.
From Mrs. Carner:
While not as exciting as One of Us is Lying, it's probably more realistic in terms of the high school and social media culture. What keeps it interesting is the format and the story told from different perspectives. I'm interested to find out how the story ends...

#MurderTrending by Gretchen McNeil
From the publisher:
WELCOME TO THE NEAR FUTURE, where good and honest citizens can enjoy watching the executions of society’s most infamous convicted felons, streaming live on The Postman app from the suburbanized prison island Alcatraz 2.0.
When seventeen-year-old Dee Guerrera wakes up in a haze, lying on the ground of a dimly lit warehouse, she realizes she’s about to be the next victim of the app. Knowing hardened criminals are getting a taste of their own medicine in this place is one thing, but Dee refuses to roll over and die for a heinous crime she didn’t commit. Can Dee and her newly formed posse, the Death Row Breakfast Club, prove she’s innocent before she ends up wrongfully murdered for the world to see? Or will The Postman’s cast of executioners kill them off one by one?
@doctorfusionbebop: Some 17 y. o. chick named Dee Guerrera was just sent to Alcatraz 2.0 for killing her stepsister. So, how long do you think she’ll last?
@morrisdavis72195: I hope she meets justice! She’ll get what’s coming to her! BWAHAHA!
@EltonJohnForevzz: Me? I think Dee’s innocent. And I hope she can survive.
From Mrs. Carner:
Riveting read! I flew through this book and can't wait until the author's next book...possibly (most probably) a sequel?! The gory death scenes and violence are throughout, but over-the-top, and therefore, it's more entertaining than realistic. It's a mix of Survivor (to the extreme!) and social media, with just a smidge of satire.
