Vela Middle School ILC
Classroom Collaboration
Our space was also utilized by our teachers for their group activities. A special shout out to Ms. C. Achtsam for encouraging the Social Studies department as well as the other departments here at Vela MS to make use of the ILC's classroom space.
Parent Connection
The Vela ILC not only servers our students and staff. We are also an integral part of our community as a whole, especially our parents. We welcomed our Vela parents during a morning session on strengthening families through communication. The campus liaison, Ms. B. Hernandez ran the meeting, and Ms.G. Carter presented.
Hour of Code
Once again our technology teachers, Ms. Z. Villarreal and Mr. A. Munoz, have volunteered their classes to the library to do Hour of Code. This year we focused on the old and new MineCraft coding activities provided by HourofCode.org. They are self paced coding activities with accompanying videos to help students learn to block code. Our school library sponsors this event annually. It has become an activity that not the teachers but students look forward to.
AR Words Read Incentive
The Vela MS ILC hosted a Popcorn & Movie Incentive to reward students who read 500,000+ words through the AR program by 8 AM on Tuesday, December 19th. 51 students met the goal! They enjoyed a fun morning watching Elf and eating donuts and popcorn. They are well on their way to meeting the year goal of reading 1 million+ words by mid May.
Annual Ugly Sweater Contest
It has become a tradition to host the Ugly Sweater Contest. Our teachers stepped it up this year. We had a great group of competitors. They went all out with the glue guns and tinsel! Our special judge was Mrs. Vela. We are so blessed that she was willing to help us make the hard decision of 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place.

Hour of Code
Students participate in the Hour of Code using the Hopscotch app to promote Computer Science Education Week.
Teachers learn about student driven digital portfolios with Seesaw.
Sam Houston Elementary
Students learned how to access the Flipster App provided by EBSCO. Flipster serves as a digital magazine newstand allowing our students, parents, and teachers the opportunity to access expository texts. Teachers can use magazine articles in their class lessons and students can engage in more leisure reading either at school or from home. Our current subscription list cover topics focused on science, language arts, and cooking for kids! One of our subscriptions is in a bilingual format in efforts to provide additional resources to our Dual Language Program.
Christmas Is in the Air!
The Milam ILC is loved by many and is used for hosting celebrations, tutorials, Duke University Talent Search, Texas School Ready workshops, etc. However, time seems to stand still when the ILC becomes a Winter wonderland during the month of December. One can smell the gingerbread baking in the oven while Xmas music plays softly in the background. Students bake their own virtual cookies and decorate them. The fireplace is lit and its warmth beckons children to find a quiet corner by the window and read a book. For a moment in time, a DCA is a distant memory.

See what is happening at Long Elementary Library!
5th grade students were delighted to view HHS Theater Department's presentation of "How the Grinch stole Christmas". The presentation was marvelously performed by some of Long's alumni students.
Wonderful Happenings at Zavala ILC
The ILC has been a busy and exciting place at Zavala. We've hosted the annual STUCO workshop with some remarkable Student Council sponsors attending. We had a memorable Veteran's Day Reception with many Veteran's and their families attending. Our students have been actively engaged in reading and we have given out our first 100 point AR shirts to seven of our students. We look forward to having them reach the 200 AR points very soon. Our working lunch Battle of the Books club with 4 of our girls participating in the competition has been a success. We look forward to competing in January with the district.
The students have enjoyed coding with programs like Swift Playground, Daisy, Blockly with Dash and Dot, and the coding curriculum from Code.org. They recently participated in the Hour of Code and were able to use some of the coding apps like Minecraft, Star Wars the Foos and Snoopy. What fun they had while learning coding commands!

HSHP ILC took part in December's Hour of Code by having their 8th grade Phoenix explore Apple's Swift Playgrounds. Swift Playgrounds is a powerful coding app that requires no coding knowledge and serves as an excellent introductory course for Apple's programming language that is used by the pros to build today's most popular apps. This year’s Hour of Code challenge was The Incredible Code Machine. 8th grade Phoenix became master builders and created their your own machine with code. This was an engaging lesson and Phoenix immediately wanted to know when they would be back to code!

HSHP Library Media Specialist, Mrs. Alexandra Cornejo, joined forces with English teacher, Ms. Bianca Rodriguez, to deliver a multi-faceted lesson on Symbolism in The Crucible and McCarthyism. 11th grade students were provided a tech infused lesson on McCarthyism and The Red Scare by using tech apps such as NewsELA, Quizlet Live, and Recap. The collaboration between LMS and teacher is an effective approach to make a positive and measurable impact on student learning through co-planning and instructional design. 11th grade Phoenix walked away wanting to know more!

The Instuctors at HSHP are moving forward in their Professional Development by learning the Seesaw application in hopes of integrating the technology in their lessons to increase student engagement. Seesaw is a student-driven digital portfolio that empowers students to create, reflect, collaborate, and share. The app even invites families to view their student's work and provide an easy communication medium between teacher and parent. The app is iPad and computer friendly, which is convenient for the variety of devices available on campus. The instructors responded with enthusiasm and have begun the introduction of the app into their classrooms.
Digital Citizenship classes were held in the months of November and December to all 10th grade Phoenix. To be a responsible Digital Citizen, we learned the precautions one must take when using social media, the consequences of cyber-bullying and the protection of personal information such as passwords and home addresses. There were many eye-opening moments for the students and we explored ways to be safer with features such as privacy settings, block and report buttons, and location modes. Students walked away with the understaing that BYOD comes with great responsibility. Our Digital Art and Animation teacher, Mr. Tovar, will extend the lesson into his classroom to emphasize Internet safety.
