A NOTE FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Dear Howard Families,
This week we are in the thick of ILEARN testing. 3rd-6th-grade students are well prepared because of all the hard work they and their teachers have put in this year. I am so thankful for the way the entire staff has pulled together to ensure these testing days run smoothly. We have an alternate lunch schedule, we pulled our Title I teachers to test groups, and Amiee Hale came in during her off time to help. Thank you for sending your child to school ready to be successful on ILEARN. We have a great team!
I want to take a moment to share how proud I am of the 6th-grade class. They have worked hard and are ready to move on to middle school. I’m already missing them and their families. It’s always a bittersweet time, knowing that as children grow, they embark in new directions.
Next week is National Teacher Appreciation Week. The reason why Howard is such a great place is because of our staff. They work tirelessly each day to bring their best for our Hornets. Many of our children begin their day with members of our transportation team as they ride to school on the school bus. We expect our children to be delivered safely to school. This goal is met every day by our bus drivers. Thank you! Once the children arrive at school, many enjoy a nutritious breakfast, and later in the day a lunch which is provided by our fabulous food service staff. They know your child on a first name basis and their likes and dislikes. You guys ROCK! Our instructional aides and kindergarten aides work endlessly with individuals and groups of students to meet their needs. We owe a big thanks to them for all they do to help our students. Their work is so important to the success of our students and often goes overlooked. Thank you! One extremely important place in our school is our nurse’s office. Mrs. Moss, not only helps with bumps and scrapes but also provides daily medication to students as well. Thank you for keeping our kids healthy, Mrs. Moss! Our custodians, Randy Underwood and Gary Acord, provide our children and staff with a safe, clean, and inviting building to enter every day. Your hard work is so very appreciated! Our resource officers, Corporal Reel and Deputy Underwood work diligently to keep our school safe and secure. Thank you for your service to Howard. Our secretary, Mrs. Ravas coordinates all of the demands of the office and supports all the Howard staff, most of all me, and our families. What would we do without you, Mrs. Ravas? Our counselor, Mrs. Schueler, is always looking for ways to reach out to our children and families. Our students love Mrs. Schueler and look forward to her classroom visits and Lunch Bunch times. Thanks for all you do, Mrs. Schueler! Last, but certainly not least is our teaching staff. They work tirelessly to meet the needs of your children each day. They come in early, stay late, and on any given weekend you will see their cars parked in the parking lot to prepare the best possible instruction for the week ahead.
Our staff at Howard Elementary truly cares about helping kids to be the best they can be! Please take some time over this month of May to reach out and thank our staff members for doing so much for our most precious resources. We appreciate all of your help and support, and our success is also in large part to all of our students first teachers, you! Thank you for all that you do for your child, and we are happy to work in partnership!
A NOTE FROM THE NURSE
As the school year is rapidly coming to a close, this is a friendly reminder to start thinking about picking up any medication(s) your student may have in the clinic. Due to school policy, prescription and over-the-counter medication (including cough drops) CANNOT be sent home with students. An adult MUST come in to pick up all medications.
The last day of school will be Friday, May 24th. Medications may be picked up from the school health clinic anytime from now until the last day of school. My regular clinic hours are 8:45 am -3:45 pm. After May 24th, all unclaimed prescription and over-the-counter medication will be destroyed according to the policy of Northwestern School Corporation
.
Thank you for your cooperation in this matter. Please feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns.

JUNIOR OLYMPICS
We will need volunteers for the Junior Olympics this year. The following is the schedule for each class and more information will be coming home. If you want to volunteer, you will need to have a background check completed before the following dates:
6th Grade (TU) May 16 9:40AM - 12:20PM
1st & 2nd Grades (TH) May 16 9:40AM - 11:00AM
5th Grade (F) May 17 9:40AM - 12:10PM
3rd & 4th Grades (F) 1:00PM -3:00PM
As we get close to the end of the year and you have gently used tennis shoes that your family will no longer need, please consider donating them to Mrs. Hale for students that need shoes for PE.
Thank You In Advance!
