Need to Know News Shared with OES Parents

Rain Barrel Workshops – This year, several of our PBL units have centered on environmental conservation and awareness. As we strive to create meaningful, authentic learning experiences for our students, we also strive to teach our students the importance of social responsibility and innovation. Here’s a unique opportunity to extend this learning…

Upstate Forever is partnering with Spartanburg Water and Spartanburg County to promote green infrastructure in residential areas in the South Pacolet watershed, particularly near Lake Bowen. Specifically, the program aims to help homeowners install rain barrels and rain gardens to help protect water quality in the lake. Green infrastructure such as rain barrels and rain gardens have been repeatedly demonstrated to significantly help improve water quality and reduce stormwater runoff into lakes, improving water efficiency at the home, and saving money.

Because the project specifically focuses on Lake Bowen, Upstate Forever are targeting two communities near the lake where water quality sampling has indicated the greatest need and scheduled three workshops in May, one of which will be held at the Lake Bowen Park near our school. The Oakland community is one of their targeted audiences. Workshops are free to the public. The dates and locations are as follows:

Tuesday 10 May 5:30-7:30 pm at Jesse Boyd Elementary School in Spartanburg

Saturday 14 May 10:00 am to 12 noon at Lake Bowen Park on Hwy 9

Tuesday 17 May 5:30-7:30 pm at Inman Intermediate School

In preparation for our upcoming district level instructional meeting on Tuesday, May 10th, we're asking all general education classroom teacher to respond to the following survey.

Earlier this year, we asked you help us with our school's exhaustion list...I hope the response provided to this has indicated care and support as we continue to fulfill our school's mission of preparing students for tomorrow's world. Now, we need to do the same for our district. As you'll see, the district is hoping to streamline, prioritize, and provide support to our collective instructional efforts. This is the opportunity to have your voice heard. With our students' best interest in mind, our district needs our help to ensure that the initiatives and opportunities we seek to provide are done in such a way that are not only fulfilled efficiently but effectively. As realized in our school's personal journey with inquiry/project based learning, we want our work to be meaningful, adequately preparing students to be college and career ready. Please spend a few minutes with this survey and work to have all information submitted to me with use of the google form by the end of the week. As always, please let me know if you have any questions, thoughts, or concerns. Thank you!

We want to give a special thanks to Mrs. Ashley Cooper’s class. Leading up to the days of standardized testing and each morning of, her students personally encouraged the students in each of our 3rd and 4th grade classes. Mrs. Cooper's students made signs to display in the hallway, visited each classroom to give words of encouragement, and provided every student with a snack each day of testing. The students in Mrs. Cooper's class enjoyed the opportunity to encourage and the 3rd/4th grade students couldn't say enough about the kindness and support they received from their friends in Mrs. Cooper's class.
