Formative assessment is done each day all throughout the day. These strategies allow me, as your child's teacher, to identify gaps in learning and to fully understand how well your child is progressing throughout the year. I use many strategies in my approach to formative assessment, some of which include:

  • Analogies
  • Checklists
  • Concept Maps
  • Conferences
  • Discussions
  • Drawing
  • Exit Cards
  • Graphic Organizers
  • Journal Writing
  • Matching Activities
  • Observations
  • One Minute Essays
  • Open-ended Questions
  • Problem Solving
  • Show of Hands
  • Teach a Friend
  • Thumbs up, Thumbs down
  • Turn & Talk

"If it doesn't challenge you, it doesn't change you." Fred Devito

"Summative assessments are cumulative evaluations used to measure student growth after instruction and are generally given at the end of a course in order to determine whether long term learning goals have been met." (Learn NC, 2015)

These tests include the following types:

  • State-mandated assessments
  • District benchmark or interim assessments
  • End-of-unit or -chapter tests
  • End-of-term or -semester exams
  • Scores that are used for accountability for schools and student report card grades
