MPA: In The Know
November 5th 2018
Nester's Info
Moving forward, I am excited to get to know each and everyone of you. We have a lot of work to accomplish and students who greatly need us to give 110%. Should you have ideas on how we can complete our work more efficiently and effectively, please do not hesitate to send me an email or ask to meet with me. In the coming weeks, we will move forward with our Targeted Improvement Plan and its components. This will require lots of feedback on how the strategies are working. Only by working together and maintaining openness and flexibility will we be successful.
My Cell Number: 214-738-0650. Please use this to communicate with me as you are already communicating with Jim.
Please send me a text stating your name so that I can add your info to my contacts.
Let's have an amazing week!
Effective Modeling and Think Aloud
At the center of great teaching is effective modeling and thinking aloud. It sounds like a straightforward and simple practice, but the difference between ineffective and effective modeling can be difficult for some teachers to identify. When students struggle to quickly master difficult concepts, the think-aloud is a powerful modeling tool that helps students see the thinking. This is directly connected to last week’s article about the importance of quality whole group instruction, providing valuable group practice before releasing students to practice on their own. Below are two videos from Get Better Better Faster that show a high school teacher effectively modeling the think aloud:
This serves as an important reminder of how simple, yet powerful, this practice can be when done right. I visited an exemplar teacher earlier in the week where she modeled this practice perfectly. It reminded that sometimes it’s the smallest, most straightforward practices that can make the biggest differences.
