A Message From Mr Freke
Greetings to you all,
Once again thank you for your support with our changes in Covid Levels last week. I suspect this is how things will go in the future, we will be in and out of the various levels and being understanding and flexible will be the key.
Well done to all the Year 3-6 students who took the plunge and trialled for the Inter-school swimming team. It was a cold afternoon and I was impressed with the great spirit and positive attitude that all students showed. The Inter-School team competes next Tuesday (16/3) and hopefully we will have some warmer weather.
This week we had 7 University of Waikato trainee teachers start in our school. They will be with us every Tuesday through to October when they do a 4 week ‘full time’ practicum. Having trainee teachers at our school adds real value because they bring fresh perspectives and ideas straight from the University.
Our Year 5 & 6 students have started fundraising for their camp in Term 4. Don’t be surprised if you are asked to buy a raffle ticket for our Easter raffle. This is a great fundraiser and in the past some students have funded the entire cost of their camp by selling tickets.
Most afternoons I am out the front of the school helping students connect with their parents as they leave. I have a major concern with how our students are crossing the road. There seems to be total disregard for the law. ALL students must use the Kea crossing. It is against the law to cross the road within 20m's of an operating crossing. The children have been given this message so please support us with the important health & safety message.
Good luck to all those involved in sport this week, and go the Chiefs!

Lunar Lantern Festival - 26th Feb 2021
Endeavour held our first Pop-Up Cultural Festival for 2021. Luckily we managed to fit it in during Level 1!
Students and staff across the whole school enjoyed participating in lots of fun learning activities set up in the hall during the day on Friday 26th February.
We feel very proud of our Year 5 & 6 students who represented their culture through sharing wonderful, informative speeches about the significance of Lunar New Year & Lantern Festival to their families. They helped us all to understand about the variety of ways this special time of the year is celebrated in Malaysia, Vietnam, China, Korea, Cambodia, Indonesia and the Philippines.
A huge thank you to the families who were able to attend on the day or supported us to make this event such a success!
Have a look at this selection of photos from Lunar Lantern Festival 2021 below to see the great variety of experiences and activities your children had the opportunity to participate in. More photos from the day are available to view on our school website
Visiting Author Sarah Johnson
She has written a lot of books!
We learnt that great writers:
-Spend time planning exciting ideas about their characters and settings
-Have amazing ideas for their stories at strange times (like when they’re out walking)
-Keep a notebook with them so they can write down their ideas (so they don’t forget them)
-Get inspired from objects like this glass buoy
-Have to re-write/level up their drafts lots of times before they get published
Sarah read us one of her books called The Garden’s Secrets. It is all about the Hamilton Gardens!
Some of us were even lucky enough to be given a book! And guess what, if we wanted to, she signed it for us.
We loved it so much we started to read it during our break time!
Swimming Sports News
On Monday 8th March we held our Endeavour School Swimming Sports. 37 students were involved in the event which had freestyle, backstroke and breaststroke races for Year 4 to 6 students. It was awesome to see how positive all competitors were and the fantastic sportsmanship as they encouraged each other. From this event, 15 swimmers were selected to attend the North Hamilton inter-school swimming next Tuesday 16th March.
Thank you to all the parents that provided transport and came to support the students.

Teams play 6-aside with 25-minute games and are available for Years 1-6. Games are played on Saturday mornings at the Gallagher Hockey Centre off Queens Ave in Frankton from 8 am.
We rely on parent volunteers to help with the coaching and managing of these teams. Please contact Victoria Hatwell via the details below if you are available to help.
Please register your child for Endeavour Hockey via our school’s online shop which can be found on our school website before the specified dates.
Fees:
Year 1/2 (Rainbow FunSticks) - $55 per person
Start date: Saturday 8th May (Term 2, Week 1) - First game is Saturday 15th May.
Last game: Approximately 28 August.
NB The Year 1/2 (Rainbow Grade) will be a coach only session for the first date. All other levels will have their first game.
Year 3/4 (Kiwi Sticks) teams - $ 80 per person
Year 5/6 (Kiwi Sticks) team - $ 80 per person.
Start date: Saturday 8th May (Term 2, Week 1)

NB: Each quarter field team is to provide an umpire for his/her own game who may also be the coach.
Kiwi Sticks teams are to provide an umpire for their own game – this must NOT be the coach. This development stage is where coaching and umpiring needs to be clearly separate for players and spectators. The Junior Hockey committee will monitor adherence to this.

When you enter the school shop, it will possibly show different age groups depending on your Learning Community. Please ensure that you register and pay for the year group that your child is in, e.g. If your child is a Year 3, then sign them up to join a Year ¾ Team and not a Year ½ Team.

Lets Recycle!
This year, Endeavour School has started a new initiative to recycle writing instruments that are broken or that don't work anymore. Every Learning Community has now received and decorated a box to collect all their pen recycling in. At the end of every term, we are going to have a 'weigh in' where we weigh every box and this will be added to a running total throughout the year. At the end of the year, the Learning Community who has collected the heaviest amount of recycling will be rewarded a special treat from Mr. Freke.
If you would love to support this initiative and have any pens, highlighters, sharpies, whiteboard markers, felts or twink pots at home that no longer work, please feel free to give them to a student at Endeavour School so they can put it in their Learning Communities box.
See the video below that shows you the recycling process at Terrcycle.
