East of the Nile river spreads the eastern desert also know as the Arabian desert. West of the Nile is the much larger Libyan desert, which covers about two-thirds of the country. Dotting both deserts are oases. An oasis is a fertile or green area in a desert. Plants grow here, giving these spots lush green growth in the midst of the hot sand.
