Thank You PTA
It is a giving time of the year and I would like to thank our wonderful PTA parents for their continuous steadfast giving of their many volunteer hours to enhance your child’s school experience. The PTA Exec. Board meets monthly to plan and monitor programs and events for our school. Thank you to Co-presidents: Lisa Gordon and Emily Shih; Vice-Presidents : Danielle Rankin, Doris Wong, and Vanessa Gordon; Secretary : Jennifer Maise; and Treasurer : Merissa Gamba. I would also like to especially thank the team of volunteers that transformed our lunchroom in to a festive Candlelight Luncheon event for the children and families. Kudos to Doris Wong, Francisca Correa, Marion Redfearn, Emily Shih, Maribel Duran, Nitida Centurion, Kristen Blook, Marek Gimza, Shavon Johnson, Elaine Wong, Krystyna Grzesiak, and Zarie Riley. I am so honored to be principal of a school where our PTA volunteers and parents are so giving and supporting to our school and children.
Holiday Celebrations a Success
Speaking of giving time, the PTA room parents did an amazing job with holiday celebrations. The children were delighted and the teachers truly appreciated the parent support for this special day for their classes. Thank you for this gift of time to plan and facilitate a memorable Winter Party.
Thank You for the Dessert Donations
The donated holiday desserts for the annual holiday staff luncheon Tuesday were greatly appreciated. The teachers had lunch from J.R.’s. The delicious treats from PTA volunteers made the perfect ending for the festive meal. Thank you from my heart for the generous donations for our spectacular staff.
Smencil Sale a Success
Thank you to all our SMENCIL Sale volunteers who took time out of their day, especially in the early morning hours, to come out and help with our sales—Audrey Sanchez-Salazar, Marion Redfearn, Nitida Parini, Imelda Rubio, Rita McCormack, Cristina Calito, Nella Liebenberg, Heidi Heiberg and our middle-schoolers Christine Baek, Caroline Madison, Charlie Plumart and Dean Satterlee. Because of our volunteers, waiting times were much shorter and we were able to accommodate over 1000 children coming up to the tables to buy Smencils. We are thankful for you, the children, and the invention of Smencils!
End of Quarter Testing and Grades
Our students are participating in the end of the second quarter/mid-year assessments which include District Assessments and local reading and writing benchmarks. Since the first semester ended today, our students in 1st and 2nd grades took Math and Reading District Assessments; and students in 3rd – 5th grades took Math, English Language Arts, Science and Social Studies. These assessments will count as 1% of the grades for the second quarter. Report Cards will be issued Friday, January 15. For an updated ongoing view of your child’s progress, please visit the portal to access your child’s information – grades, attendance and test scores. If you have never accessed the portal, please stop by the front office to sign up.
Congratulations to our 4th and 5th students who competed in WordMasters Challenge, a national competition that encourages growth in vocabulary and verbal reasoning through the analytical study of word analogies. The top scorers at each grade level were submitted. There are two more rounds, one in Feb. and one in May. Thank you to Ms. Doroff and Ms. Stanton for the higher level word work. Congratulations to the following students:
5th grade: Becca Baird, Ben Barnhill, Olivia Chan, Rohan Gonsalves, Natalie Kloss, Daniel Li, Lawson Luckie, Cydney Merrick, Xavier Ness, and Paul Shim
4th grade: Eduardo Aponte, Jill Baden, Sophia Carlton, Alex Carroll, Daniel Dixon, Erin Maybury, Mili Patel, Samson Samuel, Meredith Santoso, Megan Shih, and Eric Xu
UPS Shipping Discount
If you are shipping packages this holiday season, please consider the UPS store located at 3870 Peachtree Industrial Blvd in the Publix Shopping Center, owned by one of our families. When sending your packages from there, mention you are a parent of BLES. Thank you for supporting our local businesses. A pizza treat will be provided to the class with the most items shipped.
Optional Winter Break Learning Activity for Students
We are offering a quick, optional online activity for students to participate in while at home over winter break. To see this activity, students should log into My eClass and click on the Course Pages button. The activity begins with the picture of the penguin and can be done on any smartphone, tablet or computer with internet connection. It will be available Dec. 18 - Jan. 8th. Students participating in the activity will receive a Paw Point the week of January 11th. Directions were sent home this week in Friday folders.
As we send the children home to experience a restful and enjoyable time, let us encourage each family to treasure these special days together, for what better gift could a child receive than your time. Thank you for sharing your beautiful children and entrusting us with their education. On behalf of the entire staff of Berkeley Lake, I would like to extend a happy and restful holiday to you and your families.
Happy New Year! See you Wednesday, January 6, 2016!
