STANWOOD HIGH SCHOOL
FAMILY UPDATE FOR WEEK OF JANUARY 16, 2023
SHS VISION STATEMENT
Stanwood Spartans are united in cultivating character, modeling respect, teaching leadership and connecting to community.
One of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s quotes can be seen above and here - "What are you doing for others?"
As we celebrate a day to remember Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., let's think about what we can do for those around us.
MARTIN LUTHER KING JR ASSEMBLY
On Wednesday, January 11th, we held grade level assemblies in honor of Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
If you are interested in watching the assembly, please click on the link below.
REMINDER: STUDENT SUPPORTS
The first semester ends on Friday, January 27th. The semester grades count toward graduation. Students need 24 credits to graduate from high school. Here are some additional supports we have in place this month to help struggling students.
- Math & Science Night - Tuesday January 24, 2:30 – 4:00 PM, SHS Commons, Pizza provided!
- Lunch time focus - Student tutors will be available during both lunches in the library to provide Math help on 1/19 and 1/26.
Please encourage your student to speak with their teachers and counselors if they are struggling.
NEW: HELP US FIND THE NEXT STANWOOD HIGH SCHOOL PRINCIPAL
We have started the search for the next Stanwood High principal — and you can help.
After 17 years as principal at Stanwood High School, Christine Del Pozo will transition to the role of Executive Director of Human Resources for Stanwood-Camano School District on July 1. Del Pozo replaces Maurene Stanton, who is retiring June 30 after 9 years as the Executive Director of Human Resources for the District.
Please take a minute to fill out THIS SURVEY to help shape the search for the next Stanwood High principal. Your input and feedback is crucial to driving this process.
A diverse team composed of more than 20 members of the community, staff, students, and the District Equity Team will be involved in candidate interviews later this month. The selection would be announced in the days after the interviews.
As part of the job changes and in a cost-neutral move, the district is also seeking a full-time District Athletic Director who will oversee both middle school athletics and the high school athletics programs. The current high school Athletic Director responsibilities will shift to this full-time position, allowing our current principals and assistant principals at high and middle schools to focus their efforts on our district’s strategic plans, goals, and strategies. We are grateful for the dedicated work of our assistant principals as they skillfully managed the increasingly demanding duties of two job titles.

REMINDER: CALLING ALL STANWOOD HIGH & LINCOLN HILL HIGH STUDENTS!
We want your unique perspective and voice at the table to share what your school communities need and how we can better support students. This diverse group will form the inaugural Student-Superintendent Leadership Team.
Through this leadership team you will have the opportunity to work alongside Superintendent Dr. Rumbaugh and other district leaders to help shape the future of Stanwood-Camano schools. You will also develop your leadership, advocacy, and collaboration skills alongside a diverse community of peers. The team meets at the District office once a month.

Students working directly with the Superintendent, bringing the student voice to district level decision-making.
The work
Providing input on various topics including but not limited to school community, curriculum, school safety, social justice and opportunities for students.
The team
About 8-10 students from Stanwood High and about 4-6 students from Lincoln Hill High who represent and reflect the diversity of the district.

NEW: HIGH SCHOOL & BEYOND PLAN REMINDER/UPDATE
The High School & Beyond Plan is a requirement for Graduation. The goal of this plan and process is to assist students in developing their goals or plans for after high school as well as plan to reach those goals during high school. Here are a couple of updates about this process:
Seniors:
The finished High School & Beyond Plan must be completed in Xello by March 31st. In general terms, seniors need to complete the 12th Grade Core Lessons listed on their Xello Profile. Once they have completed all of the lessons, including the Final HSBP lesson, they should email their counselor to let them know the plan is complete so they can check students off.
We highly recommend you having your profile as complete as possible. This will help when applying for schools and scholarships. Additionally, students can share this profile with people when asking for a letter of recommendation so the writer can include information in that letter. Students should make sure you list all of their activities, work experiences, key courses, athletics, volunteer experiences, and awards in the experiences section. To access Xello, students should go to the Stanwood High School website and click on the Xello Button, then use your SCHOOL Google Account to log in. Or go to: https://auth.xello.world/Google/Student/bddee471-c87a-46ba-96cd-e46b9f14b539
and use their SCHOOL Google account to log in.
Freshman, Sophomores, and Juniors:
As part of their High School & Beyond Plan, students must take a Career Interest & Aptitude survey. We are asking students to take the YouScience aptitude brain games. This inventory helps students identify their skills, abilities, and interests while linking them to potential careers and areas of study. Here are a video about the program: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KYkD6vTn97A
Students are working to complete YouScience during advisory, but may also work on it at home. We are asking them to complete this by January 31st, so they can utilize the information gained from this work to help in the selection of classes for next year. Please encourage your students to complete this wo
