The Grass Valley WAG
Week at a Glance: 10/7-10/11
The Instructional Core: Content
As you begin this week, be sure to think about your PLC topic and how you will implement your strategy to assure student access to RL.2 and RL.3 in your classroom!
Our topics are:
- Vertically Aligned Content Language with Anchor Charts to Support
- Close Reading/Graphic Organizers
- Character Studies
Each of these will call for continued exposure to complex texts, and will support in building students' understanding of the following anchor standards in ALL grades:
- CCRA.R.2 Determine central ideas or themes of a text and analyze their development; summarize the key supporting details and ideas.
CCRA.R.3 Analyze how and why individuals, events, or ideas develop and interact over the course of a text.
We will continue to look for use of complex texts, specifically in Literacy, but also in other subject areas. While we will not be meeting for PLCs formally this week, you should be implementing your literacy strategy. Consider: In what ways are you implementing your PLC work in your daily instruction? How is it supporting your students in accessing complex texts?

Nuts & Bolts
- COST Referral Forms Please use the link at the end of the WAG to submit student referrals for students who have additional needs. We want to assure that no students are missed.
- Safety Vests Be sure you are wearing your safety vest while on the yard for duty. This supports families and students in knowing who is supervising students and supports the Grass Valley Way around safety. We also have whistles and lanyards available for anyone who still needs one.
- Mandated Reporter Training This is due annually for ALL staff members. It is due TODAY. You can access it HERE.
- Wednesday PD PD begins at 1:45p on Wednesdays. Please arrive promptly! If you need to miss any part of it, please notify Casey before.
- No Dance with Subs Teachers - please be sure that your sub plans reflect that there is NO dance when you are out and there is a sub.
- Emergency Sub Plans These were due by Sept 30. If you are NOT turning them in to the office (to Casey), please be sure to email Casey/Tahira with their location in your classroom.
Notification When Absent
- Any personal days require notification, in writing, in advance of the requested time off.
- If you determine you need to take a sick day, I ask, as a professional courtesy, that you text (804-922-7728) and/or email ASAP...even if it is 5 in the morning! Our goal is to limit the need to split classes this year, but in order to do so, we need advanced notice about absences in order to do our best to find coverage.
STIP Calendar This Google Calendar will reflect Alexa's Schedule. If you'd like to schedule time with her, please reach out to Casey.
Instruction & Assessments
Assessments:
- Grades 3-5: Post-IAB Literacy is due (ideally) this week, by Wednesday, October 9! We will be scoring the constructed responses during our PD time together Wednesday. If you are unable to complete it by then, you will need to plan a time outside of Wednesday to score and input your data. It MUST be entered into the CAASPP system by Tuesday, October 15.
Instruction
Our current focus is on complex texts. We have been vertically aligning strategies to support with assuring our students are able to access these texts during PLC and will continue that work this week. We know that exposure to grade level content through complex texts is critical for ALL students and a requirement of our teaching practice. I look forward to seeing our work in action!
SEL Corner
- Be Safe
- Be Respectful
- Be Responsible
We are a PBIS school. All staff are expected to use the Grass Valley Way with students. Be sure that you are communicating in a preventative manner, and not a reactionary one, including using an appropriate tone of voice with all students.
Behavior Flow Chart for Referrals Staff members who send a student to the office should do so based on the normed behaviro flow chart. All students sent to the office should be sent with a URF.
Universal Referral Forms For any student sent to the office, we should receive a URF. This is how we will communicate with families about the incident and track data on students' needs.
Pre-Referral Intervention Guide This guide shares information and examples about each of the pre-intervention techniques listed on the URF.

Thanks to those who sported their college gear last week! A 5th grader asked me "What college did you go to?" and I know it is in large part due to the visual reminder through our college gear. Let's keep it up!
