Chisholm Update

Greetings Chisholm Families!

I hope everyone had a wonderful spring break school holiday as we've returned back to school this week and started our 4th, 9-week reporting period. It's been great seeing all the students in school this week as we try and solidify our routines and procedures.


5th-Grade students conducted their Living History Museum today. Although this activity conducted and presented differently than in previous years, it was great seeing the students dressed up and in character as they presented information on their colonial character. A few of the pictures of this event are displayed below and the students did a great job with their presentations.


The month of March brings warmer temperatures and, unfortunately, spring-like weather. I attached below some of the severe weather procedures in place for the event of dangerous weather. Through the support of our community, recent bonds have built more shelters throughout the district. We are appreciative of having a shelter as an avenue at Chisholm in the event our weather turns and we are at school.


We've also included a tentative schedule for OSTP exams (3rd- 5th grade) along with the Parent-Teacher-Student Guides below in this newsletter.


Be on the lookout for information (The form called Triple E, for Edmond Elementary Enrollment) will be sent out next week, which will allow us to begin collecting information on planned enrollment for next year. The Annual Update will be sent out on May 3rd. Both of these documents will provide vital information to the district as we begin to plan for the next school year.


Thank you so much for your continued support and flexibility as we've navigated through this very abnormal school year. Most of our staff members will be receiving the 2nd dose of the Covid vaccine over the course of this next week. Hopefully, numbers and cases will continue to decline in the coming months as more vaccines continue to get administered, and we will continue to see our return to normalcy.

Spring Severe Weather Procedures and Information

Spring has finally made its debut and with its arrival comes the potential for severe weather. This letter is to make you aware of the district’s severe weather procedures and provide you more information about our sheltering capabilities at Chisholm.

Edmond Public School students and staff take shelter when a tornado warning is issued or the city tornado sirens are activated in the vicinity during school hours. Students remain sheltered until the “all-clear” is given by the district office.

At Chisholm, students and non-essential staff will shelter in our first-grade classroom pod, which also doubles as our tornado shelter. This area was completed at the start of the 19-20 school year and can withstand winds in excess of 300 mph. Once we have placed students in this shelter, we will not dismiss them until the “all-clear” is given by the district office

Threatening weather that approaches at the end of the school day can present additional challenges. If a tornado warning is in place at dismissal time, we will not release students to go home until the “all-clear” is given by the district’s safety director. Buses will be held and will not be in transit when there is immediate pending severe weather. If a tornado watch is in place at dismissal time, students will be released and sent home and buses will run.

Early Checkouts Before the End of Day:

The following procedure will outline how numerous checkouts would take place before the end of a school day. This checkout procedure would be used until the potential for dangerous weather becomes an actual warning, which would require us to move students to our shelter area. We would also use this procedure once it becomes apparent that the traffic increases, which helps us expedite the process.

  1. Parents enter the front office foyer where they will fill out a checkout slip for each student.

  2. Parents enter the office to hand slips to office staff. Students will be called for checkout and their dismissal area will be in the cafeteria.

  3. Parents will go to the cafeteria where students will be sent and they can leave the building through the north cafeteria door.

  • We will not release students under a tornado warning. Our shelter door cannot be easily opened and closed and we don’t want to jeopardize the integrity of the shelter.

Oklahoma State Testing Program - 3rd, 4th, and 5th Grade

Chisholm students in the 3rd, 4th, and 5th Grades will be taking OSTP exams this year. All tests will be taken digitally through the student's iPad or Chromebook. It will be important that students bring their device and make sure it fully charged on the days they have exams.

Arrival and Dismissal

Arrival - Please have your students gather their belongings as they arrive in the parking lot, and pull forward as far a possible along the curb towards the end of the first-grade hallway. This will allow more cars to turn into the parking lot. If possible, please try to have your students exit on the curbside of the car, which is safer and more efficient.


Dismissal - If entering from the west, please don't turn right on red. This will allow cars entering from the east a chance to turn in when they get a green arrow. Please have your car tag hanging in a visible area. Entering the numbers is what alerts your student to begin moving to the dismissal area. If you don't have your tag, you will need to park and come into the school so we can verify the person we are dismissing the student to.


If you don't have your car tag available, we will ask you to park and come in so we can verify your information. Otherwise, please don't park and come into the building to get your student. Staying in the line is more efficient.


Friday stats for Car Line - We had 150 cars pick up 222 students.


Students that live within our boundaries, can also utilize bus transportation to and from school. If your child has never ridden the bus before or you would inquire more information, (bus stops, bus number, etc.) please call 340-2962.
