Investigation NISC DT Lab

Design cycle blog about the DT lab at NISC

Identify the problem

Next year NISC students will have DT but right now we have no DT room. We need to design and build one quickly so that next year we can start our Design Technology unit.

Design Brief

You have the task to design a new technology lab using sketch up. It must fit specifications that are given and it will be assessed by three of your classmates.

Target Audience to test

My design will be presented to 3 of my classmates for them assess it and rate out of 10.
The people to test my design will be:

Paradox Tools- represented by Muy Lin Loh

Fox Architecture- reprisented by Shane Gladwin

Jakamo's Construction- represented by Kunwoo Na

Teachers- represented by Navapol Montong

Students- represented by LingLing Meng

Design Specifications

The product must have:
  • precise, correct and accurate room dimensions based on the existing building structures
  • four emergency exits
  • two main entry points
  • very good ventilation
  • maximum natural light
  • ability to function in the event of a power failure
  • place for washing hands
  • emergency shower
  • eye washing
  • two first aid stations
  • 1 firehouse and 2 fire extinguishers
  • a place for students to store bags, personal items and project that they are working on
  • truck loading bay
  • a display area
  • space for 25 students
  • tools/machinery and materials for for class tasks that include (a) furniture making (wood) (b) toys for kids (wood) (c) producing a letterbox (sheet metal) and (d) key fob making (acrylic)
  • storage place for wood, metal, paint and acrylic
  • tool storage
  • safety equipment and safety equipment storage

Research and Skills

We used a site called to redesign our technology room at NISC. We did this to practice rearranging the furniture in rooms using a program on the computer, which would prepare us for the more advanced designing techniques that we will try later. In my design I modified a few parts of the classroom. For instance; I placed a few computer desks together so student may have convocations and share ideas, I also but the projector in the middle of the wall and close to most of the desks so everyone can see, and finally I kept the computer facing their backs to the sun this way the students will easily see their computer screens with no shiny reflections.

We used Google Sketch Up ( to try and make the dimensions of the primary cafeteria ready for when we need to actually create our improved version of the room. I accomplished that but working on Google Sketch Up is very hard because you have to pay attention to all sides of your model, the measurements, the placing, ect. I made the exterior of the primary cafeteria today for when i make the actual insides. I have made the correct measurements and have made the stage for the left of the cafeteria. Right now it looks good and precise giving me the advantage for when i do the interior. Today I had to remake my cafeteria because my other one got lost and it turned out even better! All of the practice on GoogleSketchUp has prepared me to actually make a model of the room. At a point in the lesson we all went down to check out other areas of the cafeteria (and not just the main room), we looked at backstage and how it was all connected. I created the back area and after editing a bit I will be ready to add furniture.

To develop my understanding of design technology labs I conducted some research and during the experience I discovered that to have a successful design it is essential to get your proportions right. I also learnt that there are many objects and places that you need in a classroom.

Some classrooms I found during research
