From The Office Of The Principal.......
Dear Families,
I hope you are having a cozy day at home with your sweet children. The SPS staff spent an enlightening and productive day learning about cultivating anti-racist spaces and having difficult conversations about race, racism, and equity.
One of the many strategies I learned today was about “calling in” rather than “calling out.” The idea is that when someone unintentionally says something biased or inaccurate, you might say, “There’s some history behind that expression you might not know about'' and provide the information in an age-appropriate way. You would use this when it is clear that the comment came from a place of “not knowing.” Of course, if a statement is intentionally harmful, “calling out” would be more appropriate. The one thing we cannot and will not do is be silent. If you are interested in this strategy, you might appreciate this article from Teaching Tolerance.
COVID-19 Updates
Thank you for everything you have done to help keep your children and all of us working and learning in schools safe. Many of us are eager to receive vaccinations and all of us are exhausted from living through this pandemic for almost a year. However, this is not time to ease up on any of the necessary protocols, particularly when we hear about a new variant of COVID-19 almost daily. PLEASE reinforce with your children and follow yourselves our 3 W’s: Wash Your Hands, Wear a Mask, and Watch Your Distance. We are doing our very best with this at school and we deeply appreciate all you are doing at home. This is a School/Home Team effort. Although we wish it were over, it isn’t, so we must be as vigilant as ever.
Additionally, if you have not signed up your child for BinaxNow COVID-19 Testing, please read the letter included here in the Friday Flyers (also texted to you yesterday) and click on the link if you want your child to participate. This is a rapid test used if your child develops symptoms at school. As you may have heard, we may also be doing Pool Testing starting next month. If this comes to fruition, you would need to authorize your child to participate, if you so chose, but students will not be able to do Pool Testing if they are not also signed up for BinaxNow Testing. Please reach out to Carol Bradford, school nurse, or me with any questions.
Email Messages
I don’t know if it was the Verizon/Google blip this week or the full moon, but I missed a few email messages lately and, thankfully, people have reached out again when I hadn’t responded. As a gentle reminder, if you send an email to me or anyone on staff and we do not respond within 2 school days, please try again. Our intention is to respond within that time frame.
Warmly,
Annette Doyle
It is cold at school too! Please remember hats, mittens, gloves, snow pants!
Dear Families,
Thank you for your continued partnership during this unprecedented school year. In an effort to prevent the spread of COVID-19, we have been working closely with the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) and the Massachusetts Department of Public Health (DPH) to offer free rapid BinaxNow COVID-19 testing for symptomatic students and staff participating in any type of in-person instruction.
While we have asked all students and staff who are sick to stay home, there may be members of our school community who first present symptoms while in school. Being able to test your child at school will not only expedite results and therefore help you determine next steps to protect your student and your family, but will allow us to conduct contact tracing immediately.
The COVID-19 Rapid Antigen COVID-19 Diagnostic Test is FDA approved and delivers results in 15 minutes. Our school nursing staff has been thoroughly trained on how to administer the test using a nasal swab. The decision to administer the test will be made by the school nurse, and you will be notified via phone call before your child is tested. The school nurse will communicate appropriate testing protocol based on your child’s individual needs.
You will also be notified immediately of the test results. If a student tests positive, the student will be sent home and must quarantine for at least 10 days and until at least 24 hours have passed with improvements in symptoms and no fever, without the use of fever reducing medications. If a student tests negative with the rapid BinaxNOW, they will also be sent home and will have to be confirmed with a negative PCR test within 48 hours. Regardless of the test result, you will be notified by the school regarding next steps to take with a healthcare provider. Sudbury Public Schools will report all test results to DPH and positive test results to DESE’s Rapid Response Help Unit.
To give permission for your student to participate in the BinaxNOW COVID-19 Rapid Antigen Diagnostic Test, including permitting the school to share the test result information with the Department of Public Health and Project Beacon (a third party non-profit organization contracted to compile consent for testing and to share test results), you will need to set up an account.
The parent/guardian consent form code for Noyes Elementary School students is PCGOZX.
At Sudbury Public Schools, we are extremely grateful to our committed staff and families that continue to show great flexibility and resilience as we navigate through this school year. It takes all of us working together to contain the spread of this virus.
Please remember that any individual with symptoms should not be coming to school and should follow appropriate protocol.
If you have questions regarding the COVID-19 Rapid Antigen Diagnostic Test please reach out to your school nurse.
Thank you,
Brad Crozier
