Unit 7 What is Community?
We are starting our Unit 7: What is Community?
We will be doing a Novel Study using a book called, Tornado, by Betsy Byars.
Students will read the novel in class and learn about communities now and past. We will continue our usual vocabulary word studies using our novel.

WHAT'S HAPPENING IN THE CLASSROOM??
- Innovation: Innovation Block 2 continued! We are moving to our four weeks of engineering where students will be using this time to research, work on various coding programs and participate in mystery science. We've also been using Pear Deck's Weekly Wonders.
- ELA/Language Arts -Unit 7: What is Community? Students will be reading a novel by Betsy Byars, Tornado. Through reading the novel, students will discuss and write about communities. We will discuss what it means to belong to a community and how communities work together.
- Math - Unit 5- Time! We will be learning how to tell time. We are also starting our geometry unit. We will be exploring shapes and learning how to find area and perimeters.
- Writing - Students will be writing a narrative story involving the character, Tornado from our novel study. Students will have to imagine an event in which Tornado the dog has to deal with some pesky farm animals. Students will first write a rough draft and then we will go through the editing process.
- Spelling- This week for Unit 7 week 1: actors, bakers, owners, painters, players, sculptors, vendors, visitors.
- Vocabulary- Students will be able to use reference materials and context clues in a text to build their vocabulary. They will show their understanding of the words by using them in a sentence during collaborative conversations and in their writing. Our vocab words for Unit 7 include: community, explorer, Fahrenheit, founded, grateful, settlers, tourists, unpredictable, wetlands. Students participate in a weekly activity called flashcard factory where they get to practice using the vocab words in a sentence and representing the word with a picture while collaborating with their classmates.
- 7 Habits - Habit of the Month: Habit #5 Begin with the End in mind. During DPS Hour students will listen to a story and then create their own stories about someone demonstrating beginning with the end in mind.

- Practice Multiplication Facts!
- Google Classroom-Work is assigned on google classroom for practice during class time but often times there is not enough time for students to complete ALL of it. This is a great resource to see what students are doing in class and students are always welcome to work on any remaining work at home for extra practice!
- Math online programs: Dreambox, Khan Academy & Class Hero
- Ideas for games:
- Multiplication War-flip over two cards and whoever can multiply the two numbers the fastest keeps the cards.
- Roll two dice and multiply the numbers together. Add up all of your products and the first person to 200 wins!
