Principal's Corner

We can't believe it's already NOVEMBER! We have had a wonderful 2021 school year so far. We are feeling very grateful for the continued support of our families in making Oppe a safe and special place to be every day. Check out some of the fun we had in October and don't forget to mark your calendars for upcoming November happenings. Don't forget to stay connected with Oppe through Parent Square and follow us on Facebook and Instagram for more information and photos of events as they happen throughout the month.

Don't Throw that Wrapper Away!

It’s that time again for the Unwrap the Waves candy wrapper recycling contest! Oppe families and staff will be collecting candy wrappers to be fully recycled and used to make school supplies. So start collecting wrappers at home now, and bring them to school Nov. 3rd - Nov. 5th. Last year, Oppe received FIRST PRIZE after collecting nearly 9,500 candy wrappers and proudly won the honor of naming a sea turtle patient Galvez!

How many wrappers will we save from the landfill this year?

New Playground? YES, please!

Did you know that our Oppe PTO has a Venmo account as an option for parents to easily make a direct donation to our school? Can't get much easier than that! Feel free to share it with your family members so we can get closer to our goal for new playground equipment.

October was National Principals' Month

We couldn't talk about October without mentioning our amazing Principal, Mrs. Prets. We are grateful for everything she does each day to make sure our students are having the very best educational experience possible.

Teach a Kid to Fish Program

We dodged some nasty weather last month, but third and fourth graders finally made it to the pier to catch some fish! In the classroom, they learned about our area's watershed, the impacts of marine debris on sea life, common fish of the Gulf of Mexico, ethical fishing practices, and so much more. At the fishing pier, they learned how to properly handle fish, safely remove hooks, and release them gently back in the water. Thank you to the Texas Parks and Wildlife, Turtle Island Restoration Network, Galveston Fishing Pier, and Jimmy's on the Pier coordinators, educators, and anglers for collaborating to provide this unique and educational experience for our island students each year. Second grade anglers, get ready! You are next!

Red Ribbon Week

Our students and staff teamed up all week to say BOO to drugs! Thank you to our counselor, Mrs. Phelps, for organizing and planning each of our fun days again this year.

Keep Our Seas Plastic Free- Bottlecap Mural

We were excited to host a ribbon-cutting event with Artist Boat on Oct. 21st to celebrate our new educational outdoor mural made entirely from the bottle caps collected by our students pre-Covid. The 7'x16' mural was designed and constructed by Artist Boat's Eco-Art Residency Program to share our message with our families, community, and visitors to keep our seas plastic free. We think they did a beautiful job honoring our Gulf of Mexico's Flower Garden Banks National Marine Sanctuary. We hope you love it too!

After a school-wide fire safety presentation at Oppe, kindergarteners walked to the Galveston Fire Department Station #4 on Oct. 20th and 21st. They learned about the equipment firefighters use and explored the station and a fire truck.

Oppe Robotics is Off to Regionals

The Oppe Robotics team is heading to REGIONALS after bringing home the Excellence and Skills awards in their first tournament of the year on Oct. 30th. Special thanks goes out to our dedicated Robotics leaders, Galveston ISD Texas ACE after school program, Ball High Robotics, and all the families who took time out of their busy weekend to show their support. It takes a village!
