The Beat
Week of October 5-9
Week 5 Wrap-Up!
Welcome to our first newsletter of the year! It is our goal to send an issue of The Beat each time grades are communicated, so be on the lookout for a choir update alongside progress reports and report cards.
In this issue, we'll share some of what we've been up to this school year and clarify some of our remote learning norms. As always, if you have questions, please feel free to reach out to me as well as Mrs. Shupe. And just in case you missed Open House, here's the link to the video Mrs. Shupe and I shared. We are obviously on the road to becoming viral sensations.

Assignments & Late Work
With regard to late work, choir is following the campus policy, which states that assignments are due at the beginning of the following class period. Once class begins, the assignment is late, and 10 points are deducted. We will then deduct 10 points per day for up to three days, at which point the student may only earn up to a 50. No one wants this, so in order to avoid falling into this trap, please encourage your child to submit work on time. Our choir assignments are short and to the point.
Attendance vs. Engagement
It is important to understand that attendance does not equal engagement. If an in-person student comes to class and immediately goes to sleep for the duration of the lesson, I would count this student present because they are in class; however, any incomplete work would be a zero. The same is true for remote learning. We have had several in-class assignments that were not completed by students who were signed into class. Students who are absent may complete in-class assignments asynchronously (after class). Students who are in class and do not complete in-class assignments will earn zeros. Again, the best way to avoid this situation is to make sure your child is not only present but engaged in the learning.
Mr. Jauregui, Head Director
Mr. Jauregui holds a Bachelor of Music Education in choral music education from Centenary College of Louisiana and a Master of Arts in music education from Texas Woman's University. Outside of Pershing, Mr. J. serves as Director of Traditional Worship at Bellaire United Methodist Church. When he's not working, Mr. J. can usually be found on a patio with his best friends, Lesley and Michael.

Mrs. Shupe, Asst. Director
Mrs. Shupe is starting her first year as Assistant Director of Choirs at Pershing Middle School; however, she is not new to the Pershing community. Mrs. Shupe has served as the collaborative pianist for all six Pershing choirs since Mr J. took over as director in 2016. Additionally, all three of Mrs. Shupe's kids have attended Pershing!
Mrs. Shupe holds a Bachelor of Music from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. After her graduation in 1997, she taught elementary music in Clark County and Fairfax County, VA. In 2003, Mrs. Shupe took a leave of absence from teaching in the school setting to spend time with her three children but continued to teach piano and accompany high school and middle school choirs in her community.
When Mrs Shupe is not teaching, you may find her reading a book, hanging out with her husband and kids, or walking her two Alaskan Huskies.
