YHS Guidance: Your schedule
Fall 2023-24 school year
Schedules posted August 23rd
Important information on how to access your schedule on parent portal
Please know that scheduling is a long and detailed process that strives to enroll all of our students in their required academic classes. In addition, every effort has been made to place our students in at least one of their preferred elective classes. Sometimes an elective class is not running, or it conflicts with other required academic classes.
Students: In the event you are not placed in an elective of your choice, this class likely conflicted with another elective or academic class, or is not being offered this year and could not be scheduled. Please email your counselor to see what alternative electives options are available to you. Once a schedule is changed, it cannot be undone.
CLASSES AND MINIMUM CREDITS REQUIRED FOR EACH GRADE LEVEL
Freshmen & Sophomores: 6 classes + PE per semester
- English
- social studies
- math
- science
- world language (if applicable)
- *elective or skills, YESS program, resource support
- physical education (PE)
*Note: 1 credit (full year) of art or music or performing arts and 1/2 credit (one semester) of health is required for graduation in New York State. Many students select one of these options for their elective spot in their freshmen and sophomore years of high school.
This schedule should give you room to have a lunch period or a break in your schedule to visit your teachers, counselor or library. Please know that adding more classes to your program reduces the option to have a lunch and increases your work load after school. Balancing school work with after school clubs, athletics and other commitments is a learning process. Please plan wisely as you navigate your high school years. Email counselor if a required course is missing.
Juniors: 5 classes + PE per semester
- English 11
- social studies 11
- math
- science
- world language (if applicable) or elective class
- physical education (PE)
* Note: if you did not yet earn .5 credit in health, this course must be completed by the end of your junior year. If you have no class scheduled during a period, then that is your free/lunch period. A minimum of 5.5 credits per year is required in your junior year. You have the option to enroll in more electives if they can be scheduled. Email counselor if a required course is missing.
Seniors: 5 classes + PE per semester
- English 12 (or its equivalent): two semesters
- social studies 12* / economics
- math**
- science**
- world language (if applicable) or elective class
- physical education (PE)
* Note: civic internship replaces the social studies 12 requirement only. Civic internship does NOT replace the economics requirement for graduation. Students who previously earned credit in AP Economics have met the economics requirement for senior year and may select a different elective in its place.
** Most college bound seniors take math and science in their senior year. Discuss your individual situation with your counselor. A minimum of 5.5 credits per year is required for your senior year. You can enroll in additional electives as well. Email counselor if a required course is missing.
Seniors: if you have not yet earned credit for art/music/performing arts and/or health by senior year, reach out to your counselor to schedule this required class.
YESS program!
What if a REQUIRED class is missing from my schedule?
Credit requirements for each graduating class:
Freshmen & sophomores: 6 classes + PE per semester
Juniors & seniors: 5 classes + PE per semester
Email your counselor if a required class is missing or you are short the required number of credits per semester on your schedule.
What if an ELECTIVE class is missing from my schedule?
At this time, counselors are addressing any required academic courses that are missing from schedules. Please give us time to address this. If an elective class is missing, please give us one week, then email your counselor to check what elective options are available for you this school year.
Adds, drops and changes
Counselors cannot honor requests to be in a different section/period of a course or to have a different teacher. Students should only email counselors if a class placement is wrong/missing from their schedule. Please note that some changes will impact other courses. Once your schedule is changed it cannot be undone.
Drops or level changes: can be made BEFORE the end of the 1st marking period without notation on your transcript. A course drop after the 1st marking period ends, will result in a "withdraw" noted on your transcript. Speak with your teacher first and obtain a drop form from your counselor. Teachers sign off on these forms. Seniors: once you request that your transcript be submitted to colleges, you will need to notify your college of any changes to your schedule prior to making changes.
Adding courses: First semester and full year courses can be added within the first two weeks of school. Once school begins, see your counselor to obtain an add form.
What is the best way to reach your counselor: Email
Email is the best way to reach out to your counselor. Please do not send multiple emails or call and email. This causes additional delays and confusion when processing a request.
