Shakopee AVID News
In pursuit of success, dream BIG!
Welcome to the 2015-2016 school year!
There are great activities and events planned for the school year. The AVID classes will take their field trips as usual in the fall and spring. In the fall, the 8th graders will learn about collaboration, teamwork and overcoming fears at Base Camp in Minneapolis, 9th graders will learn more about the performing arts when they attend fun, educational workshops and see a show at Park Square Theatre in St. Paul, and 10th graders will learn about community service by volunteering at Feed My Starving Children in Eagan. In the spring, the 8th grade classes will visit Gustavus Adolophus College, 9th grade will visit the University of Minnesota, and 10th grade will visit Augsburg College.
For family events, there are three AVID Family Nights in the works. The first one is "AVID Family Night: Can You Smell What AVID is Cooking?," which will be held at the Shakopee West cafeteria at 6 p.m. Nov. 5. A health coach with Allina health will do a fun, interactive presentation on the importance of good nutrition, how the food we eat impact our daily lives, and how to make healthy choices in the grocery stores, at home, in the cafeteria and dining out. It will be followed by a cooking demonstration by a chef who will show you how to prepare quick, easy, healthy and affordable meals that fit your health needs, budget and busy schedule. There will be food and refreshments. All AVID students and families, including siblings, are welcome. See the event flyer included in this e-newsletter for more details. Information about the other two AVID Family Night events will be provided as they get closer.
The AVID Awards Night is held each year to honor the achievements of all AVID students. This year's theme is Sweet Success. It will be held in the evening at Shakopee High School on May 26. More details will be provided in the spring.
As always, if you have any questions, let our AVID district director or your child's AVID elective teachers know. We are here to help. On behalf of the entire AVID team in all three secondary buildings, we hope you and your family have a great school year. We hope to see you at an AVID event soon.
