Secret Santa- Book Exchange

During our Holiday Party on December 22nd, we will be doing a secret Santa book exchange. Students completed a survey asking for favorite types of books/ genres to give secret Santas some shopping ideas. Students should know who they are shopping for. I don't want this to be an extra stress for families during the holidays, so gently used books are welcome. If you do buy new, please keep them under $5. I sent home book orders that are due on December 11th so I can get them back in time. My classroom code to order online at www.scholastic.com is GXPNB. Let me know if you have any questions or need any help with ideas/ purchases. Thanks!

Hour of Code

This week the class participated in the worldwide hour of code event. Students learned basic coding skills through code.org, in fun and interactive games. Levels increase difficulty, but also step kids into more complex ways to code. Students can access this website at home as a fun way to engage with coding. Advanced learners can also code in JavaScript or take part in courses offered through code.org. You may even want to give it a try!

Science- Conducting Experiments

The class is working on their final FOSS Plane experiments and getting closer to having a published video showing their work in the scientific process. Students chose an independent variable (the variable they will change in the experiment) and determined how they will measure the change (dependent variable). They then came up with a question, hypothesis, a list of materials they needed and then a detailed procedure to control variables. They are again using iPads to record their experiment, but this time they are also using the Numbers app to collect data and then turn it into a graph to analyze their data. I look forward to seeing finished videos next week and will share them as a link in the next newsletter.

PBIS Coin Goal Success!

November was a close one, but the class worked really hard and earned the goal of 70 coins for the month! To celebrate, the class voted between a few reward choices. When the votes were counted, there was a virtual tie- so I allowed them to have both a free gym class to play dodgeball as well as a stuffed animal day. On the reward day, December 4th, the classroom was a buzz with excitement for having extra fun and unusual visitors. The class really got into caring for their special friends throughout the day. Check out the pictures below. I was really proud of the class for working hard to achieve this lofty goal. The next goal is to have a total of 130 coins for all of 2nd quarter. They are making progress to achieving this one. Stay tuned to see what they will choose next!

Turkey Time

This is late, but I hope you enjoyed the "Thankful Turkeys" that kids put together for Thanksgiving. Many students put a lot of thought into what they were thankful for. It was great to see the variety of things/ people they were thankful for. I know I am thankful for being their teacher- such a wonderful class!
