An Educator's Resolution -- One Word
I don't normally share much from my Facebook world, but one of the leadership groups I follow offered an alternative to the typical New Year's resolution -- One Word.
The idea of One Word comes from the book, One Word that Will Change Your Life by Jon Gordon, Dan Britton and Jimmy Page (2013). The use of "one word" from the book to replace the typical resolution is to amplify the change you want to make in your personal and or professional life and to allow for more people to support you in that change. A web page and Twitter has a dedicated hashtag for #oneword2018. This video may pique your interest more.
How does one word amplify the change over having a goal that is resolute? Once a goal is reached, most people drop the ambition to alter or modify their goal to continue to work throughout the year, and most have dropped their resolution by April, if not earlier. Choosing one word allows you to plan a progression of goals and provides the flexibility for different pathways.
For example, someone who makes the resolution to perform a daily good deed may choose the word "care" instead, which would not only allow for a daily good deed, but other pathways in which care can be shown or given.
Just as you would identify a goal of change as a resolution, such as losing weight, saving more money, doing a daily good deed, etc., choose one word to allow you to focus on for the year. Write it. Print it. Repeat it to all you know. Post it on your fridge. Make it your screen saver. Tweet it. Hashtag it. Share it. Blog it. Keep it for a year.
Encourage students to choose one word. This link provides examples and lessons to show you how to help students to reflect on what they hope to accomplish in this coming year, guide them to choose a word that will have a positive impact on themselves and others, and then ask them to share it, set some goals, and to later reflect on it.
What is your one word?
