Honor the Past, Prepare for the Future, Participate Now
Mr. Mauck's Musings
Today we honor those that have sacrificed to protect our freedoms. November 11th is the day we pay respect to our servicemen and women on Veteran's Day. JHS held a program featuring our band, choir, the voice of democracy winner, and Dr. Stephen Sample as the invited speaker. We all owe a debt to you that can never be repaid. Thank you to all the veterans in our community.
The best band in the land, the Marching Wildcats, made that statement fact on Saturday by winning the Class B Indiana State Championship. Into the Starry Night was a Van Gogh-inspired masterpiece. All the talents of the band members, directors and volunteers were on full display. Congratulations to your State Champions, the JHS Marching Wildcats. I wanted to take a moment to recognize a student that made a huge contribution but was not part of the band. Ryan Verkamp designed and helped manufacture the three mobile Van Gogh rooms used as props. These rooms had trap doors and folded down to a fraction of their size to fit into a trailer for transport. Ryan has a bright future as an engineer.
The JHS Cheerleaders also brought home some State love. They finished 5th in their division with a fantastic performance. Congratulations girls. The JHS basketball team will be in action at home against Heritage Hills at 6 for the JV start. Come out and support the cats.
This week's Student of the Week is Ms. Geanaveve Ferrara and the staff member is Mr. KeAundre Peak. Thank you both for making JHS the fantastic place it is. Mrs. Hughes in conjunction with the Crisis Connection hosted a Natural helpers retreat on Wednesday. There is more information below about this fantastic peer group.
Mr. Land's "We the People" class qualified for the state competition with a good score at the regional on Wednesday. These classes learn about government and study the Constitution and Bill of Rights. In each class, the six-unit groups prepare four-minute opening statements in response to three congressional hearing questions. Afterward, judges ask students follow-up questions to test the depth of their knowledge on the topic in a six-minute question-and-answer period. The team of Abby Aders, Lili Robinson, and Gabi Schmitt won their Unit 5 presentation. Jasper sent two Manufacturing & Engineering teams to VU for a Challenge Contest. The 2 teams each finished 2nd place in 1 of 8 challenges. Congrats to Alex Wehr, Cale Bueltel, Alex Schwenk, Chase Spears, Luke Dahmer and Ryan Verkamp, Aiden Seifert, Kayilyn Wright, Jon Green, Brandon Mehringer, Hayden Armstrong, and Noah Lamont.
JHS has a few competitions going on in homeroom. We will begin an academic competition to see which homeroom can earn the highest GPA for a semester. The winners of each class will be treated to a lunch or breakfast. The FFA will be sponsoring the Toys for Tots contest. Students may bring in a new unwrapped toy for the collection. The JAG classes are hosting an Angel Tree event at school beginning just before Thanksgiving. Mrs. Ferguson and the student council has a food drive in the works with the other county schools. All proceeds will benefit our local food bank. The local Koatz4kidz is also starting up. Please see the information in the Community events. This is the season to give and help those in our community that needs a helping hand. I am so proud of our students for their philanthropy.
Again, thank you to our veterans on this very special day.

Call for Foster Parents in DuCo
“Right now, there are more than 20 Dubois County children in foster care. Over 15 of these children are placed outside of Dubois County. The Indiana Department of Child Services depends on people like you to offer foster children a safe and loving home within their county. Children of all ages – but especially older youth and sibling groups – need a place to stay while in the foster care system. Learn more about becoming a foster parent at Indianfostercare.org or contact the Dubois County DCS office at 812-482-2585 to speak to a Foster Care Specialist.”

BOOK BANTER FROM YOUR LIBRARY
News from your JHS Library!!
Calling all Colleen Hoover fans. There is a packet in the library of books similar to hers if you want to know what to read next
November’s contest is to sign a star in recognition of our veterans and then submit a slip guessing how many books are in our library. You can participate in honoring our veterans by stopping the library and signing a star.
November is also Native American Heritage month. Thank you to Mrs. Fierst for sharing an authentic Native American dress to display.
Please be encouraged not to skip checking your selection out at the front desk. And please be certain to return your books. Books are expensive to purchase. For each lost/missing copy that has to be replaced, fewer brand new titles can be purchased.
Happy Reading!!
