Principal's Corner

Hello Edison Families,

It is hard to believe it is May! We have only a handful of days left. The year has gone by so quickly. We were incredibly fortunate to bring back so many things that we had to stop during COVID. We have appreciated being mostly back to normal and enjoying events together again. One of those events being our School Dance, which was a hit! Thanks to our Student Council and PTO for putting that event on for our students!

Although there are only a handful of days left, we have A LOT to do in those days! Here are just some of the things coming up in the last few days at Edison.

  • May 6-Testing Tech Party- In celebration of the hard work our students did on their South Dakota Assessment exams we are going to celebrate with a tech party. Students will get some down time at the very end of the day on Friday, May 6 to hang with friends and be on whatever tech they choose. We know testing is tough and we appreciate our student’s hard work throughout last week!
  • May 9 & 10- MAP Testing- We will complete our final MAP assessment! We are excited to see the progress of our students!
  • Week of May 9- Emergency Drill Practice- We will have our spring semester emergency drill practice throughout this week. We will practice a Tornado, Fire, and Lockdown drill.
  • May 11- 8th Grade Poetry Slam- 8th graders from the Sioux Falls School District will participate in a poetry slam at the Washington Pavilion.
  • May 12- Student of the Month Breakfast- 2nd Semester- 8am- invitation only
  • May 17- Our incoming 6th grade students will visit Edison, tour the building, and learn more about what to expect in middle school.
  • May 17- Athletic Information Night- 7pm- Learn more about participating in athletics in the 22-23 school year by attending this informational night.
  • May 19- Student of the Month Breakfast- 1st Semester- 8am- invitation only
  • May 25- Last Day of School/8th Grade Party

This week is Teacher Appreciate Week at Edison, and we thank our PTO and Student Council for providing treats and thank you notes to our wonderful teachers! We are grateful for all they do for our students at Edison!

As we conclude our school year, please know how much we have enjoyed your student! If they are leaving us, we wish them the very best in their future! If they are returning to Edison next year, we will see them in August for another great school year!

Sincerely,

Amber Blume, Principal

Edison's PTO

As we wrap up the school year, Edison PTO wants to welcome everyone who will be joining the Edison family next year - all of our future 6th grade families and any new 7th/8th grade families. We also have to say “good-bye” to the 8th grade students and families. Eighth graders, we wish you all the best as you begin your high school adventure. And to the many eighth grade families who have given your time volunteering at events, helped provide and set up meals for conferences, donated money, and participated and supported our fundraisers during your time at Edison…we are truly grateful for the contributions you’ve made to our PTO and school community! A special thank you and farewell to our out-going book fair coordinator, Samantha Wescott. Thank you, Sam, for all your time and hard work!

Staff Appreciation Week (May 2-6):

Edison has an amazing group of teachers, administrators, and staff who work incredibly hard for the Edison students every day. PTO, along with the Edison Student Council, are excited to be able to show our gratitude during Staff Appreciation week. We will be treating the staff with May Day baskets, Bagel Boy Bagels, Poppy’s Popcorn, Star Wars themed treats (on May the 4th), and Culver’s meal certificates for each staff member.

8th Grade Party - Save the Date!

Parents of 8th graders, mark your calendars for the 8th Grade Party: May 25th, 2:00-3:45pm. Dr. Eggers is planning a really fun event for our graduating students and can use our support. In the next week we will be emailing you a sign-up to help with activities, supplies, and set-up/tear-down. Hope you can join in on the fun!

BAND NEWS~

All State Band 2023

We are already looking forward to next year’s Middle School All State Band. This special event features the best band students from all across the state. Students are selected by competitive auditions, and the music for next year’s auditions will be posted very soon at sdmea.net. We will be promoting this in 6th and 7th grade classes this spring so that students can get an early start on the music. We encourage students to give it a try! See Mr Jensen or Miss Deinken for more information.

PRIVATE LESSONS~

Now is a great time of year to consider starting private lessons on your instrument/voice. Individual lessons with a skilled teacher are a great way to learn, grow, and excel as a musician. The private lesson list can be found on the Edison Music Dept. website at http://emsmusicdept.weebly.com/private-instructors-list.html

News from the Counseling Office

Registration is now open for High School Summer School – check the link for classes and registration https://www.sf.k12.sd.us/page/summer-school

Current 8th graders should strongly consider taking High School CONNECTIONS class! It is designed to assist students in making a smooth transition to high school by providing connections with math, reading, and writing skills. The class incorporates a variety of activities which provide students with an opportunity to improve their academic skills, as well as to familiarize them with their new high school, expectations, procedures, opportunities available, and organizations/clubs/activities. This is an excellent opportunity for students to get a head start as they enter high school.

Students who successfully complete the class will earn .50 elective credit toward their total high school credits.

The course will include math and language arts units which will help prepare students for high school. See the counseling department for more information.

CTE Academy Information

For more information about CTE Academy please check out the website! There are several courses available to freshman second semester. https://www.sf.k12.sd.us/o/ctea

REGISTRATION is complete!

We have completed registering students for next year! All Edison students have registered for 7th, 8th or 9th grade! If you have questions regarding registration please contact your child’s school counselor.

WEB

The 7th grade teachers and WEB advisors will be in the process of selecting 7th grade students who would make great WEB leaders next year. WEB Leaders are positive role models who help make 6th graders more comfortable in middle school. They participate in various leadership activities throughout the year and must attend mandatory training next August. WEB Coordinators will be talking to 7th grade pro-times on Tuesday, April 6th during pro-time. Students can apply online on the library home page, under Counseling Links by April 15th!

Athletic Information

Edison Families-

Our track and field season is coming to close with the Metro Conference meets the week of May 9-12. The weather has not always cooperated this spring for outdoor events, but our nearly 200 athletes have worked hard to be the best they can be in their events. Good luck at the Metro Conference track and field meet.

Breaking News:

Middle school athletics is adding activities for the 2022-23 school year. Next year the Sioux Falls Public Schools approved adding a 7-8 boys and girls performance dance season in the fall, 7-8 boys wrestling in November and December, 7-8 girls wrestling in January and February, and 8th boys and girls soccer in the spring. The 7th grade is not involved at this point, but hopefully will be added in the near future. The addition of these activities will help us to reach our goal of all students participating in school sponsored activities.
