CES 4th Grade News
December, 2019
Happy Holidays!
The fourth grade team would like to wish all families a restful holiday spent with family and friends. In this loveliest of seasons may you find many reasons for happiness!
Dressing for Cooler Weather
With cooler days upon us, please remember to make sure your child is prepared for outdoor recess.
Classroom Supplies
It’s that time of year where students may be running low on supplies. Please check with your child to see if he/she needs to replenish any of their school supplies. And...please keep sending in those tissues--we are always in need of more! Thank you!
Reading News
We are wrapping up our novel study/book clubs and will be moving back into informational text. We will be studying the many ways an author can structure a text to help us make meaning out of text. We will also be looking at how to use information you learn from a text to support an argument and use text evidence in support of a claim.
Students will always be asked to prove their point by citing text evidence.
As your child is reading at home, encourage them to cite evidence from the story/text as they discuss their reading with you. (“How do you know that? What does the author tell you? What can you infer about _____?”)

Social Studies (& Science ) News
Throughout the month, we will continue our study of the Maryland Colony and its founding, important early Marylanders, and colonial Maryland government. This will lead into a look at Maryland and the American Revolution.
Writing News
As we head into December, students will continue researching topics for their informational writing pieces. They are all so excited to learn more and teach readers with their finished pieces!
Classes are researching a variety of topics, so ask your child what he or she is researching! Our goal is to teach others, so encourage them to teach you more about their topic.
Students will be expected to include important elements of information writing, such as key details, important/relevant vocabulary words, and text features in their writing this quarter.
